My friend had just recently made the move from WINME to RedHat9. It was working properly, but then his sound didnt work, and then he said he couldnt play media files. He said the Linux needs windows to run. is this true?

why would a seperate OS that has no link to MS need a competing OS to run its applications on?

Not true, but more importantly, Red Hat for home has been discontinued. He should be using Suse or some other variant. Will have more luck with his problems using an OS that has better support from people to hardware.

ered hat 9 has beed discontinued, profeesinal workstation is still being made. one of linuxs few great disabilities is support for soundcards. no, he dosent need windows. i find suse is very good for hardware support though

    Hey TechieNTraining,
Like everybody said, RedHat 9 is an older distro. If he wants RedHat, tell him to get the Fedora Core 1 (Core 2 stable should be out soon, but not yet).
Now, if he wants to use the RedHat, he will have to download and install a media player himself. It doesn't come with Redhat (or Fedora Core, which is the “current” RedHat, kind of,...) Something like Xine, etc...

Now, I would suggest that you tell your buddy about the knoppix distro:
It comes with multimedia stuff already on it.
Here is a link where he can buy the knoppix cd:

    http://www.edmunds-enterprises.com/linux/cart.php/ba/pdtl/product/160

there are other vendors, many, I just happened to have good luck with this one...

Also, (dare I say it, dare I say it?) There is the Mandrake distro, that is good for the nOObies.

I myself am such a newbie, but in my case, I have determined to study this stuff and beat my head against the wall as necessary....
It seems that this type of thing takes a little patience and work, so just heads up.

    A word about multimedia:
seems that one can get RealPlayer as a “plugin” for the Mozilla browzer, Xine, like I said...
But the Quicktime movies? Not that easy.. I have seen where there is a product (not free) that can enable it, that's all I know...

But barring anything too weird, you can do just about anything with the Linux OS that you can with the MicroSoft ones, but it may not seem as easy

With the sound, I'm not sure, would take a more learned linux user than me, and I don't care too much about sound. Maybe his card wasn't detected by kudzu. He can try reading the dmesg file:

in a terminal at the prompt, type:
    more /var/log/dmesg

you can then hit the “space” bar to scroll down the screen, one screen at a time.
See if it says anything about a sound card being detected. Note: this is just a shot in the dark, ok? I'm no expert at this stuff.

We will help if we can...

    Regards,
    Robert

This is a confusing response. I was pretty clear it was not available for the home user. If he was in a corporate environment, it would be a different comment. I stand by what I said and feel it is quite accurate. He will get better support, including driver support, by a more modern Linux version.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe this is the sort of post we are trying to avoid. You simply said what I said differently and with more spelling errors unless we posted at the same time, of course :)

    Thanks.

red hat for home discontinued . i have heard this before but honestly not sure what it means.

i understand they don't do tech support for it now.
they aren't printing any new ones.
    or new versions but.....

i mean people still use it yeah?

linux is something i want to learn, but i don't wanna use the ones like mandrake. i want to use one that isn't made for easy home use, but is actually a good one to know.

i have a copy of red hat 9, and a BIG FREEKEN book with it.
so i want to use this, don't really care about the tech support or all that
i just wonder about this. so any more info is good

I totally HEAR you, green_newbie! You know, with the price of hdd space nowadays, I figure, why not go for it? I put RH9 on my box, on one of the many partitions on it.
I figure, install, see if you can get online with it (so that it will be fun), see if you can install some binaries, maybe install some applications from source code, tweak some configuration files with the text editor,
You know, learn the way around the directory tree and so forth.
Then, I eventually muck the whole thing up and start over, maybe with a different distro, ha ha! :p ;) :)
But see, its so cool to mess with it, you know?
Its almost like, for me, the only wrong way to do it would be to not do it at all.....

Like, say to ask a woman to go to a coffee house or something. One could think...
Wonder how I might bring this up?

But in the end, its the install and the messing with it that makes it so much fun, not the fretting over this OS or that OS, it seems to me!

    Check this out..gotta BIG wallet?

Meanwhile, leading Linux seller Red Hat opened a new chapter in its 10-year history and a new front in its war against Microsoft. Red Hat announced its first version of the open-source operating system for desktop computers.

As with its existing server products, Red Hat will sell the desktop version as an annual subscription that includes support and software updates through the Red Hat Network. But it won't sell them individually, instead offering 50-computer subscriptions for $3,500 annually--about $70 per PC per year.

I stand corrected, this news IS brand new though. Its good news, RedHat always sucked on the desktop, but has the resources to rock.

once again i am totally confused.
sooo..... red hat sucked as a desk top? i thought it was one of the more populair versions of linux. or it was just good for manageing a server? and not so good for home users?

    this is off subject.
i like the idea of linux and a a more ... raw computer os, one where struggleing to use it will force me to learn more on how computers work.

i think i need to be learning how to use windows really well first.
and then build a computer and figure out what OS i want to use for that one.
there is too much to learn, i am just going to play the arcade

    Mandrake ISOs released

Just so you are aware, Mandrake 10.0 just released their ISOs -I've ben waiting for this. It has been suggested as a really good starting point for *nix newbies like me. Now that the ISOs are available I will be installing it ASAP. Many a Linux guru has pointed me towards Mandrake for it's hardware recognition and graphical interface. If you are interrested you can find the ISOs at
    http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/ftp.php3#iso
I just found out they were available tonight and I can't wait to get home to d/l them.
    Yours,
    522.

I have a couple of spare distros. If any UK user on dialup wants to try linux but can't wait three weeks for the D/L then I can mail you, either; Redhat 9.0 (3 CD's) or Mandrake 10 on a DVD distro.

It's pretty good fun, like going back to learn DOS and Windows again.......no wait, it's more fun than that:D

Ha! I missed out on the DOS days (I'm old enough, just wasn't into computers!)

    I'm not giving up.
    I'm not giving up.
