linux online

hello, recently i have been follin around with linux university. I am trying to connect it to the internet through a router. So far, I have configured the four files needed in pico. These:
/etc/hosts file
/etc/host.conf file
/etc/resolv.conf file
/etc/networks file
There is one more step that i need to do, but im having trouble. I have to add the default gateway to route.
When ever I type the command "route add default gw 192.168.0.1" ,which is the last command needed to complete the setup, It says this "SIOCADDRT: Network is unreachable"
The only thing that I can think of is that port 80 is not open. Can any1 verify that this is the problem, or give me another reason why is not working?
