Linux Partition Format advice needed

Hi, i'm new to Lunix and wanted to format a partiton on a external hard drive for Lunix Kubuntu 7.10 for data etc, i have partiton magic which can format in Lunix Ext2, Ext3 and swap? plus all the other standard formats.
What should i use if any of these.
And how big would you make the primary Lunix OS on my internal drive as i'm dual installing with Windows XP, thanx for any help.

If you have an internal drive just for the OS I would probably give it 6-10 gigs of space

I would use EXT3 for journaling support and you need SWAP partition based on RAM, probably a gigabyte, I would also put that in the internal drive for speed reasons ( i am assuming the external is USB)

so all in all
/ 6-10 gigs EXT3
SWAP 1 gig
/opt/apps xxxGIGS for application installs on the external drive

 

Hi, and thanx your help, would my Kubuntu CD split the partition into the right formats and size if i give it the free partitioned space, i mean if i've already partitioned 10GB of my hard drive when i choose to install Kubuntu and use that partition doesn't Kubuntu do the rest automatically.

 

It will ask for slightly more than 10 GB. It will not use it, but it will ask. You can edit the amounts back down with the install program.

If you install Kubuntu, look in the next week or two for the newest version of KDE 4.0 to be available.
