M.A. is there now, or ever going to be, a linux side of MG? I'm just delving into Linux (using the CentOS 4.3 distro) and am looking for a comprehensive site for support and for software that works. Thanks!

You have a RedHat based OS-

I have debian based Kubuntu running here.

    http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=centos

There are Forums for Centos located at

    http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/

Not many replies when I have asked Linux questions here....

Don't give up. It is excellent and FREE!

We have a Linux forum already.

    It's called Malware Removal. :D

    Ouch... :)

I had a go at GenToo for a while but the novelty of getting to compile everything pretty soon wore off and I went for a bit of Kubuntu too... I quite like it actually though I hate having to su up to root when I want to do something big - it won't let me log on as root at the moment (just installed it)... I know people say you shouldn't log on as root by default and I haven't had a weekend quite as painful as the time I accidentally moved my /lib directory somewhere else (just think about the world of trouble that leaves you in); but live and die by the sword, thats what I think :D

i like linux...i've used a bunch of different distros...kubuntu being my favorite (except that lame default wallpaper). but i keep going back to windows, b/c it works. while i've learned a great deal in linux, i know what i'm doing in windows. but it's the little things that keep me from using linux all the time.

Ahh, Linux rocks. Got gentoo on my main desktop dual booting with Windows for video editing and such. UT2k4 runs very well on gentoo :) My laptop runs Xubuntu, and my server runs plain old Debian (testing).

As for having to su up to root - su is reletively insecure. Configure sudo correctly and that is much better (you don't have to type the root password in... ever). Loging in with gdm under root is a really bad idea.

The problem with having a site like MG which serves Linux programs is that most distros have different ways of installing software ... debian uses deb packages or apt, redhat uses RPMs, suse uses SuseRPMs, gentoo uses ebuilds, and so forth - so putting the software up for download would be tricky. I suppose you could have listings with links to all the major distro's packages of that piece of software, with a link to the source - but that'd take quite a lot to maintain.

when i get my wife her laptop in a few months, i'm planning on going linux full time...possibly dual-booting with xp on a small partition (~15-20gig of 120gig)

Plus most reasonably sized distros tend to have their own set of forums which are pretty good as the main contributors live and breathe the distro and can probably help with specific problems very easily...
At least GenToo does. I was very impressed by the level of support provided by GenToo in terms of docs and forums.

Had some interest, as you can see, this is now in a Linux forum. Enjoy.

Sort of fun, with Vista coming and lacking all that was promised, it has re-kindled my interest in Linux. As you know, we have http://mac.majorgeeks.com because we like alternatives and Mac's are pretty cool as well. Who knows, maybe someday we will have a Linux sub-site. For now, I hope this helps.

I've just had my first Linux experience with Knoppix. I realize that it is probably not the greatest distro, but it was enough to make me see the light. I'm currently learning Python, and there it was, three versions pre-installed. Not to mention all the other software. When I get back the states (three months) I'm going to go full on. I just feel bad that I recently shelled out a bunch of pesos for XP (again). I now have almost $600 tied up in an OS I'm about to cut loose.

For those of you who are newbies like me, Linux Format (printed in the UK) has a special on the newsstands this month, "Linux Made Easy" with a "Getting Started with Mepis" DVD included. Well worth the $20 (US) price. The magazine covers the distro in some depth along with detailed (pictures, yea!) instructions for installation, including dual boot. Mepis is billed as a "complete desktop" and they aren't kidding. Included on the DVD are Gimp, OpenOffice, FireFox, Evolution, Thunderbird and more games than I have time for.

While I have very limited computer knowledge and virtually no previous knowledge of Linux, I installed the DVD on a dualboot W2K...not only did it work, but it found all of my hardware on the first pass. I have to tell you that I think Microsoft's days are numbered for me...this is the most fun I've ever had on a computer.
