I have red hat linux on my computer and the computer starts up with kde from the start. I don't think I like kde (how do i exit it to get to the linux prompt btw?). I want to try out gnome or xfree86. I don't think I would ever use kde, so I'd rather just uninstall this. how would i do that?

i tryied alt-fx but i didnt try ctrl-alt-fx until just now, so i solved the exiting problem. I'm so sorry about all this. next time i will do more research before posting something like this.

XFree86 is the framework on which KDE and GNOME run upon. It's not by itself a graphical enviorment.

If you are in kde and want to change to gnome, do this:

From the "RedHat" icon in the task bar,

    >System Settings > More System Settings >
    Desktop Switching Tool

Then, when you log out and log back in, you will be in the other desktop environment you choose, say gnome.

There are even better ways to do things, though. Stand by,
I may have something for you...

Okay, Jim S, are you ready to do a little editing with vi, or Emacs, or something? It has to happen sometime. May as well be now! ;)

check out this link here to a little "tute" that says it better than I can.
Just remember: runlevel 3 - no GUI by default, you do the command
    startx

to start the desktop (kde, gnome, twm, fluxbox, or whatever you crazy kids are using...).

runlevel 5 - the GUI starts up by default.
this is not NEARLY as much fun. Not geeky enough, if you ask me.

    Here's the link:

    Good luck!

Not stupid, just not knowing about something new. ;)

    No problem, Jim S.
Note that you will have to use a text editor of some sort, emacs, or vi, or something else (one of a MYRIAD of choices).

I am trying to use vi myself, because it is supposed to be on every Unix system, and its the "geeky" choice. It shouldn't be to hard to familiarize yourself with enough to make simple changes such as the one described here.

    If anything arises, though...

Give a post. Exciting journey this stuff is....

    ;) :p  :)

lyonipiece, if you want help with your problem start a new thread rather than adding on to a 4 year old one.
Give what version of XP (SP installed and if you have XP CDs or manufacturers restore/recovery CDs) and version of Mandriva you have installed.
