I'm researching reasons why our linux system seems to have numerous problems. We have a server and 5 pc's. The pc's run linux and windows. Each day we have a problem with something.
One day the internet access will go down on 1 or maybe 2 of the pc's, we get the IT guy to fix it then the next day a pc will simply shut down to standby mode of its own accord whilst working on it. This randomly happens to different PC's at different times. Not one day goes by where we don't see a problem. This has only happened since Linux has been installed. Could this be some type of virus or incorrect settings?

I am only asking as our IT guy always blames BT or the machine itself even though other PC's can still get internet when another one can't.

    This has completely stumped me!!

    Any thoughts would be appreciated

Your IT guy is to blame.

These issues should never affect productivity in a work place..thats what he is paid for, to handle problems.

I really doubt Linux plays any part here, unless someone is deliberately messing up things, once again *points at IT guy*. Job stability if you always have problems ;)

Machines going to standby mode suggest something other than networking. Are they all win machines giving the grief? Older equipment? Could be power supply gasping for it's last breath.

It must be the server, configure properly the router and all should be good > then make sure 5pcs have the right connection settings .

Incorrect settings most likely, standby mode is probably the power supply settings for the monitors you maybe using

    Many thanks for your comments!

Today my colleagues PC went bang...literally!!!

A big flash of blue light and a loud bang and lots of smoke!!! The PC initially started going mad each time you opened a program ie. the fan would go loud and the program would load slowly.

Makes a change as last week it was my pc that was playing up but now its changed to hers!!!!

What I don't understand is we have run windows for years and never had any problems until a new IT bloke took over and put Linux on. I must admit I am ignorant to Linux, it is something that has never interested me and something I would never use at home. But our IT bloke assures us that it is best for security and stability.

We have a server which takes care of most but my pc for example at work has a hard drive of just 3GB. To me this is not right. I am no expert unlike many of you guys.

My only explanation is that we are overloading the PC's but we keep being told different excuses.

Anybody got any ideas as to what we should be running with?

The server seems powerful enough as we can access it from anywhere with no problems.

A common list of our current problems:

Internet connection drop on SOME pc's
    We lose access to files
Emails take ages to come through but only on some pc's
    Slow system

Any comments would be appreciated, I only work there, but get a rollocking when I haven't done any work because of fighting the computer.
