It's me again! Im having problems with my wireless netwok card. my older card isn't compadible with Linux (it is a linksys wmp11). I bought another card for $30 from d-link (I have DWL 520 rev E) which looks like it's compadible. I found this link: http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=357&question=Linux but im having trouble installing it. when i type "make config" to configure it then "make install" to install, it looks like it is installing it then at the end it says things like [****] error1 or something. I'll try to get a more acurate message...

wireless neteorking is one of the downfalls of linux. a place i have found very helpfull is www.linuxquestions.org (sorry MA if i shouldent have posted the link). also, the model # is not what matters, it all depends on the chipset

    Hi Jim S. !
Remember, I'm still a nOOb at this. So....
I looked at the README file that is linked to that page, by way of the FTP
    directory.
    I saw there this note:

    quote from the README:

    Prerequisites:

To build linux-wlan-ng you will need:
    - Configured kernel source code for the kernel you are running.
Ideally, this will be the resulting tree after building your own
kernel. Configured means that you have at least run 'make config',
'make menuconfig', or 'make xconfig'. If you are trying to build
linux-wlan-ng for a previously existing kernel binary (one you did
not build yourself), look for help on the mailing lists because it
can be tricky. I always run against kernels I've built myself, so I'm
not much help in this area.

    End of quote.

Now, did you recompile your kernel? If you did not, nowadays it should not be difficult to do, what with the make xconfig option and all.

It seems from this that the binary kernel that would be loaded from a regular
old “default install” could present problems.

Also, be advised: Like DanGeekTek said, I have heard that getting Linux to
run wireless can be a big deal, can be challenging. I've seen some things on the web, may get back to you.

I do know one thing: If you pull this off,
    Then, You Da Man!!!!!!

Okay, now I remember what I saw. I'm not a wireless kind of guy. I like "old school" type of stuff (I use dial-up, he he) :)

Anyway, O'Reilly has a brand new book dealing with it in general. Here is the link:

in case it is of interest.

    Regards,
    Robert

wow! its so comlex that they wrote a book on it! if i cant figure anything out i may just get a regular network card and use a wireless bridge with it.

    LOL
    I'm telling you, LOL!
I don't know what a "wireless bridge" is.... LOL
    but it sounds complicated haha.
I haven't messed with any kind of networking at all yet, only getting online with kppp with my USRobotics hardcore hardware modem.

I am fixing to mess with a crossover cable of some sort though, ethernet, serial, or parallel, in order to network to a
dell Inspiron 8000 that the third shift boss at work gave me.
The video subsystem is messed up... XP won't even work right after a few minutes.

I can at least do ssh or rsh or telnet or something to get it to crunch for distributed computation for me.

    So much to learn.....
    So little time...

It's not that complicated. A bridge is just a device that forwards packets. A wireless one does this wirelessly and has a rj45 output so you can connect it to a regular network card. (I'm taking a cisco class currently:) )
