:confusedSo I have CD's with Ubuntu 9.04 and Mandriva 10.3, and a DVD with the full Knoppix 5.3.1. Any opinions on which is the best for an old Windows user to go over to on a seven-year old notebook with 512Mb RAM?

    Thanks.

I never guess. I simply run the live CDs or DVD as the case might be and see what the hardware likes. My notebook (from 2001) with 1GB RAM only happened to like a few. I ran but never installed puppy. I ran and later installed MEPIS. I also installed PCLinux 2006 (it didn't like newer versions).

Try the three you have and see which one works the best on your hardware.

don't know about ubuntu but i do know that you will struggle with mandriva,
best bet if you want to try mandriva is use the 2008.1 (spring) version

    availible here

    go for this version mandriva-linux-one-2008-spring-KDE-int-cdrom-i586.iso

i have a lappy with 512 ram and its the best version for it, no 3D though

knoppix is not really for install, its live cd/dvd only, although it can be installed its not for newbies

I already pretty much know none of them will see my Belkin pre-n wireless card, apparently Belkin doesn't make drivers for Linux. I will get the mandriva 2008.1 and try it instead of the one I have. My notebook is very s l o w on Win XP after adding all the service packs, I am hoping for some performance increase.

    Thanks for the information.

the wireless issue isn't really an issue as you can use win98 drivers (sort of),

i use wireless on my lappy with 2008.1, its a stock dell latitude from 2001/2

there will be a noticeable increase in performance

I did a quick read when upgrading a few weeks ago and the Belkin is very difficult to configure. I searched and opted for an Atheros based card for my Dell C840 I am using Mint 8 on Aurora.

ME1002 My Essentials card - I think I see the card is the same as a Belkin from this page. It was a shell shocker a few weeks ago.
