    Well I'm not sure what has happened but here's a rundown. On my xp system computer I have 2 liteon cdroms. One is a 52x cd rom and the other is a 52x cd r/rw drive. All of the sudden, when I went to use my usuall program that requires a disk, (thomas brothers map guide) I would get the promt that the data is not available. So when doing a quick quick of the device manager, I saw to yellow !! points next to both liteon drives. When going into properties I see that it says the drive is not available and that the drivers may be currupt. When I go to try and update the drivers it says windows already has the latest or best drivers installed. I tried removing both drives and restarting. They are then detected and then installed. Going into the device mgr. again I see the same problem again. Now I've done a search online for new drivers and all I've been able to find is that with xp, they are not needed. The windows drivers I guess are supposed to be sufficient. I have also tried updating the firmware. I did find updates for one of them and updated it. Still the same problem after doing this. The 2 drives are one ltr-52327s and one ltn-526s.

    Any help or suggestions would be great!!

    I've also tried a system restore on about 3 or 4 different points and I keep getting the prompt that windows was unable to restore at this point , try another restore point.

    Have you tried deleting the IDE controller/channel that they are connected to in Device Manager and rebooting? This would make Windows detect the IDE controller and install the drivers. :)

    Have you opened up the case and unplugged and plugged back in the IDE cable as sometimes they strangley enough come loose...maybe vibrations or the actual movelment of the tray going in and out.

    I had this happen once one of the IDE connectors just was a bit loose and didnt fit snugly ( is that an actual word, if not I like it ) so just used a new cable which was a tighter fit.

    Thanks for the suggestions. Nothing seemed to work but I did find a link in another forum with a reg edit that worked. I'll post it here but if you are having the same problem, use at own risk. I'm always leary of posting reg edit type of stuff. Back up reg if worried before using the below suggestion.

    If the error is associated with your optical drives then you'll need to try this:

    Open regedit and go to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    Now delete the keys:
    LowerFilters and UpperFilters in the right pane.
    NB only one key may be present but still delete it.

    Now reboot and your optical drives should function again.

    NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software.
