Lot of so called spyware free websites are still posting files that are infected. Example:

    http://www.download.com/Burn4Free-C...g=pop.feed&subj=Burn4Free-CD-and-DVD&part=rss

I have seen no less then FIVE websites post this today.

At last check it installs NavHelper and NavExcel Search Toolbar, neither are easy to remove. Apparently leaving small text that it installs a toolbar makes them feel better about it.

MajorGeeks has rejected this submission countless times. It is malware. Watch your step out there, these so called malware free websites reflectly poorly on a few of us.

Another example, websites posting Encopy 3.47 today. Sure wish they tested it, like they tell you they do, because I did 3 hours ago and it is a corrupt archive. Emailed the author.

Making sure people understand the difference between false promises and reality. We dont compete with these large websites, were a niche website, but we find that they continue to spread malware truly disturbing.

I guess they best update their scanner as software testers, well thats if they actually test them.

People surprise me though... I tend to mom's puter and keep it clean and neat, updated AV etc. She works as a teacher, and she told me her students had been talking about porn sites they went to, and since they are only about 10 years old, she got the name of them and went to have a look. She was shocked at what she saw, and I was shocked that she did it on her own computer and not one at work! http://members.chello.se/solange/smileys/lol.gif

So I told her what a dialer is (she is on dialup modem) and now she is afraid of using the internet! http://members.chello.se/solange/smileys/Rotfl.gif

I have long suspected c/net of promoting downloads that contain suspicious files, even though they claim to be otherwise.
This behaviour is not only unacceptable, it is (or should be) illegal!

However the fine print (you mention) that they include, allows them to escape the legalities of the situation and this is most upsetting!

    Thanks for exposing this MA!

I'm cautious about most sites, and pretty much just stick to MG. I have come to trust, respect, and greatly appreciate this site and those that created it. I in fact download and test-drive programs from this site that I wouldn't from anywhere else!

If by chance I do need a program that Major Geeks doesn't have, I make sure that before, during, and after installation of said program I throughly "poke" it with the security program "sticks" that I have obtained here! A practice I highly recommend when dealing with any unknown piece of software.

    Truth be known, I rarely have a need that Major Geeks can't fullfill . . . . (umm, program-wise and advice-wise, that is . . . ;) )

MG was untrusted for me 5 months ago and I had no idea of it's existance 6 moths ago. Then I saw it on a magazine, a friend recommended it and I started downloading. A couple of weeks later I was recommending it. My point is that when someone is clean the word spreads.

Lately I was wondering around a site and I saw some very interesting stuf but it was an untrusted site. It looked much like MG. I thought how useful it would be if we opened a thread where one could post an address (not a link) and the wise MG scanners would check if it's clean.

You know, I'm not entirely sure how I found Major Geeks for all my downloading needs. I think it was when I was downloading Ad-Aware from Lavasoft's site that there was a mirror set up at Major Geeks. That's pretty much how it started by finding the mirror, but I don't know if it was Ad-Aware or some other program.

I've always used CNet's site long ago. Even when I was watching ZDTV (later TechTV.. later G4TechTV.. now gone) that Leo Laporte would always go to their download site at hotfiles.com which was a link to ZDNet Downloads. Now with all the adware/spyware/junkware I don't even bother with CNet or ZDNet since I know CNet owns ZDNet (at least I think so since the download site looks so similar).

I also used to use Softpedia, but they're bogged down with all sorts of new applications and such. It makes me wonder if they really do testing on the programs. I know they have a graphic that states 100% No Spyware, No Adware, No Viruses, but I am very unsure about those downloads since I know for a fact that I haven't had any problems from here.

I did find a post long ago (before I started even posting to the forum myself) of the files being tested and even explained about a test one time (I think). I even remember when Weather Watcher (one of my favorite weather programs) had that WhenUNow spyware in it. Thankfully there is a non "bundled" version which does not include the spyware which that package is here on Major Geeks. I am very careful as to what I think is going to contain spyware or not. And I always have multiple anti-spyware programs running just in case one program cannot find that another will.

It makes me feel better about the software here and trust it 100%. Thank you for all the hard work!

No Softpedia is not testing, they were the site i was referring to yesterday who posted spyware and corrupted files. If they tested it, they would not have posted it being corrupt. Pretty obvious tell on that one. They also post a ton of toolbars and link out to the majority of their downloads making that guarantee a joke. At last check their SiteAdvisor ranking wasnt too hot either.

In our tests, a very small percentage of its many downloads contained adware or other unwanted programs. However, credible user feedback suggests this site is safe to use.

Then they list 11,034 infected downloads. LOL, thanks SiteAdvisor!

    http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/download.com/downloads/

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lets look at their bias some more. Our sister site, Demonews.com is marked as RED for ONE download. ONE. That download was removed some time ago. I guess 11,034 is ok, "1" is bad. In total they claim 19, the other 18 being minimal, you will notice those are often ranked at 0 nuisance because they are not dangerous files.

    http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/demonews.com

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Softpedia:

We tested this site and didn't find any significant problems.

They then proceed to list 5146 total downloads that were found to be infected. Guess 5,146 is ok too.

I think it is time we pulled SiteAdvisor, this bad advice they give makes their tool as bad as they claim other innocent people are. Go Mcafee!

Thanks MA for the information. I had my suspicions when I was monitoring their RSS link one time for new Windows and Linux downloads. I figured they were working like CNet is.

I know I wouldn't worry about the McAfee's Site Advisor, but then again I knew they'd screw up that program just like their other programs. And here I used to use McAfee's Virus Scan for DOS way back in 1991.. yet now I am not a huge fan of that company or their products. I have been wondering if I should dump my Site Advisor, however, I haven't paid any money for the program... yet.

Hi sorry for intruding on a post, Im pretty new here at MG and was browsing around the forum. Just noticed this post mentioned siteadvisor. Do you still recommend it here? Im just asking as I see that siteadvisor is still recommended here in the following post about setting up a new computer -> http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=107991

Does anyone have any experience with sitehound free from firetrust, Im using it myself after ditching Siteadvisor a couple of months back and it looks pretty good so far. Available for IE and FF browsers -> http://www.firetrust.com/firetrustsitehound.html

Thumbs up on a great site, I now know where I need to be for downloads and advice ;)

I like SiteAdvisor, I dont like their ratio policy, its broken. In general, I always say there is no need if you stick to trusted sites, sites that your find out from either from a friend or trusted website. A little time and common sense avoids all problems. :)

As of last release it has been fixed. How SiteAdvisor rates Download.com still annoys me simply because they are green because they "remove files once infected files are discovered". Because of their size, popularity and slowness, this leaves many people infected in the meantime. This is contrary to McAfee claiming to be non biased.

Another large site got the yellow they deserved. Demonews got the green it deserved. Majorgeeks has always been green and remains. http://www.siteadvisor.com/sites/majorgeeks.com

So, Site Advisor remains a great tool to have, but not 100% perfect like any tool. Common sense is your friends, relying on others is your downfall.

Since finding MG I stay here pretty much for my software needs. If by chance I need some program not offered here that is hosted on another site, I google said program for feedback - and if mollified with what I find I then download it while "loaded for bear" as it were - I am lucky to have more then one computer at my disposal, and I download any "wild" programs onto my spare under the watchfull eyes of the security solutions I have found here at MG. Only after extensive scans and testing do I then allow it onto my main PC.

I must add that I have not had to do this much . . . most of what I need I can find right here. In my 10 years of online activity this is the best site I have found, both for software and for forums.

Well done, Major Geeks - you are an oasis in a bleak internet desert, and I appreciate the effort taken to create and then maintain the high quality of this site.

Thank you. Anytime you find something we dont have, let me know and I will look into it. I check most download websites and have to test everything because I only trust a few of them, just like you.

Since I've become such an avid geek of portable applications, I'm glad that some of them have been posted here. Granted I've been getting more from portableapps.com (John Haller's website) mainly I can trust him to do a good portable application.

Also I'm thrilled that AutoPatcher is mirrored here! After seeing the AutoPatcher Vista version, I know I'll see the XP version when they've got the version they're using on the Vista version. :)
