    Hello
I have been trying to create a usb I can go to sensitive sites with. I have Windows 8.1 with 6 GB ram.
I tried UNetbootin but have trouble like not shutting down, a lot of script booting up and requiring hard boot. It does wok sometimes and did not require download and install. I just worked from the desktop.

Linux Live Usb really entrenched itself in my pc.

I would like a program I do not have to install to create a Linux OS to secure my sensitive sites like UNetbootin but more functional and with persistence.
    Thank you for your help.
    Peter

Peter, unfortunately, Linux Live which does install but can be removed from your computer was the best USB boot stick creator I found.
Unetbootin gave me problems as did Pendrive Linux's Universal Installer
    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
You can try it and see if it works for you.

I've used all three many times. Some failures and some successes until I settled on LiLi as my program of choice because it works consistently.

I have also encountered the problem, not related to the boot stick, that some distros say they are turning off the computer and never do. It is the distro, not anything you did incorrectly. I simply power off the computer by holding the power button.
Some distros change the time on my system clock so when I boot into windows again, I need to reset the clock. Again, this is something some distros do.

Whatever happened to the Puppy Linux project? Would have been perfect for what you want.

peter, as you have a decent spec system the best way to 'sandbox' your most sensitive data and web activities would be in a virtual machine such as VMware Player or VirtualBox, both free. You could install a Linux distro in a VM and be able to use it while still in Windows and have all the facilities of a full OS at hand including, of course, persistence. Using a VM on a decent system is no different from using the host Windows system - you can just hop between the two at will.

I found VM's ok to create but hard to do the second half which is installing a program which would print etc. I was told they should not be used on newer machines as damage could occur.

Puppy was erratic on disc and usb..

I am using Ubuntu created with UNetbootin with 1 GB persistence and so far so good. I too experienced hanging where I had to hold the power button.

I will give Lili a try What program did you use to create it? It seems UNetbootin works off the desktop while Universal installer actually installs to do it work.
So I will give Lili a try if I know the program that gave you success. Right now Ubuntu is going good and prints etc.

Should my internet be my home network or where it says direct connection # 1? What if I am away?

Thanx all. I spent about 2 days trying to be sensitive site careful' and even contacted Trusteer Rapport for their uninstalling tool.

    LiLi is Linux Live.
I currently have sticks created with it: Porteus, Peppermint, Crunchbang, Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Mepis, Leeenux.
I wiped Mageia, PCLinuxOS, and two different versions of Puppy.

Click the Network Manager (in tray near clock or it might be at the top in Ubuntu) and just don't set it up to connect automatically to your home network. When away from home, look over the available networks and select the one at your location to connect.

Ah, pity you can't get along with a VM as it's so much more convenient not having to reboot to use it and not needing flash drives either.

Pure bunk about VMs damaging newer systems. By 'newer' I assume you mean GPT formatted disks?

Puppy is a very solid distro, widely used, and because it runs entirely from RAM is lightning fast. But it's not for everyone of course, no distro is. If yours was misbehaving possibly you had a bad download.

@Earthling -yes, I would use a VM had things worked out. I tried. My pcs are about 3 years and have the older BIOS.

@Plodr - I was under the impression you only had luck with Lili or is that just with UNetbootin?
Are you saying I will have better luck with another program? The Universal pendrive seemed not to be portable.
    What would you suggest?
I can set the time, enable the firewall, print and I will try to use the network I am in. It failed that way before so I chose # 1 direct connect.
This last Ubuntu is working at times but I cannot keep hard powering down when it hangs or I will blow my P.S..
I guess it boils down to you please suggesting a program to create and a choice to try with that program and I will give it another try.
@ Both -I had little luck with discs so the weak link here is the operator. I have Win 8.1 and am using SanDisk 4 GB with 1 GB persistence.
    Thanx both

I used Unetbootin and got it to work, sometimes. I used Pendrive and it worked, sometimes.
That is not correct. Look at the first image here http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
Step one is to select a Linux Distribution from the dropdown to put on your USB.
If I recall, at the bottom of the list is other. I've used that option for a Linux Distribution when the iso I have on the computer is not in the list of choices.

I thought the Universal Pendrive itself, not the Linux, had to be downloaded - ooops!
I did find out that if I use a larger than 4 GB pendrive, like 16GB, Ubuntu installed and all works well even persistence. The printer, firewall and my home network work well.
All of the 53 days of updates installed.

I now know that The Universal Program works so will give it a try.
    Thank you for the referral.

Glad you got it working. The first time is the hardest; after that it becomes easier. Hint, buy a few sticks on sale, download some linux ISOs and test out a few others.

When Ubuntu first opened there was a message that said, " Caution, others and the world can write to this."
    It then disappeared.
Is this referring to persistence as I have 3GB of the 16 GB stick for it or is this a problem?
I scanned both the stick and the pc with Defender from Win 8.1 and also MBAM.
    All seemed clean.
I red in a forum that this may be due to Win 8.1 and secure boot but I have the older BIOS.

Sorry, I haven't a clue. I do not run Ubuntu nor Windows 8/8.1.
I have persistence in other distros and I have never seen that message.

    That is ok.
I have had little luck with the 3 major installers with Ubuntu which is the easiest but did get Mint on one drive. I find it hard to understand but that is for me to work on now.:)
