lnk Errors

This is my first time ever on any type forum, but I am desperate. I used Registry Mechanic to compact my registry. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Shortly thereafter, every icon on my desktop changed to the generic icon. The name of the program was listed thereunder followed by .lnk. I cannot open any of the software. I can get on the Internet, and that is it. I've tried rebooting, going to a previous backup on Registry Mechanic, having Registry Mechanic rescan and repair. Nothing works.

Obviously, I am not a technician. That's why I have Registry Mechanic. I would never trust myself to go into the registry of configsys without some very specific instructions.

Any ideas about what has locked me out?

You don't say what operating system you are using. Can you try System Restore?

My OS is Windows XP. Since everything has .lnk, I can open nothing other than Registry Mechanic and the Internet. The restore component of Registry Mechanic has not worked. It says it restores, I reboot, and things are just as they were before.

Thank you for reading my plea for help.

    Go to:
    Start
    Programmes
    Accessories
    System tools
    System Restore

When the screen opens, make sure the button that says "restore my computer to an earlier time" is selected.

    Click Next

This should bring up a screen that allows you to pick a date before you used the reg cleaner, and restore your system to that date. If System restore was enabled.

You may have to start in safe mode:

I have already tried the System Restore Process. It kicks me out.

I'm going to reboot in the SAFE mode and see if that works.

I even bought PC Mighty Max who said everything was diagnosed and fixed. No, no, no. I'm still working on the problem.

    Thank you for your suggestions.
