OK... somebody please help. I started my Windows XP Home today and it wouldn't start. Yesterday, I had an error that said:

"Windows could not start because the following files is missing or corrupt: <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll"

So then I just went to driverguide.com or something like that, downloaded hal.dll, and extracted it to system32 folder. I also extracted it to "system" folder cause at the time I forgot what it was (either system32 or system) so I just extracted it to both. Now, when I start my XP, I get the error:

"Windows could not start because of an error in the software. Please report this problem as:
    load needed DLLs for kernel.
Please contact your support person to report this problem"

Any ideas? I really need my desktop now. Thanks in advance.

Doing a repair is the easiest solution I can find to this problem / error message:

    1. Boot from your XP installation CD.
    2. At the welcome screen, choose enter.
    3. Once at the license agreement, press F8.
    4. At the next screen, choose to repair the selected Windows XP installation by pressing R.
    5. The files will begin to install and then your PC will reboot. During the reboot you will be presented with option of booting from the CD again by pressing any key. Don't press anything. Allow it to finish the install without booting from the CD again.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks. I'll try this soon. But I'd like to know, will this delete all my personal files? (Documents, programs, etc.)

If it does, is there any way to backup my current files right now?

    It shouldn't.

Hal.dll is not a file you simply replace, it has a different name, and then is renamed to hal.dll by XP setup, depending on computer type, etc.

Nonetheless, for both problems, a repair should fix it.

    OK thanx a bunch.

And if it does delete my files, I know the one to get mad at!!!

Just kidding. I don't really have any important stuff anyways, and I stored all my docs on an ftp server cause i was bored one day. lol

OK. So now, I'm reinstalling xp and now a pop-up says

"The file 'igfxext.exe' on Intel(R) Extreme Graphics Windows 2000/XP Installation Disk is needed.

Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

    Copy files from:

    c:\windows\softwaredistributiodownload\install"

Can you give me the file? I keep clicking cancel but it keeps showing up. You can e-mail it to me at dehi@optonline.net. You might find it in the c:\windows\softwaredistributiodownload\install directory (If you have Windows XP). I can copy it to a floppy and locate it there. Thanks.

i dont have this file cause i dont have that type of graphics but you should have gotten the requred cd with you computer. If you have not got this specific cd it might be on another disk. I cant remember what these disks are called but they come as a pair a blue and a white one. They have all the drivers and stuff needed.

    Skip it.

Reinstall your video drivers after the repair.
