Loading personalized settings

i previously logged onto my laptop as a guest, and the battery ran out when i was on, with programs running (Norton 320 and The Sims 2) i started it up later on, and it appeared to load slowly when the system was resuming, so i pressed 'esc' ans it went on to the logging in menu, and i was informed that i was already logged on as a guest. therefore, i logged off, then logged in as a guest in order to log off from that properly. now, when i log on as myself, it tells me that personalized settings have not loaded correctly, and to either contact the system administrator (myself) or to check the log book for more details. restarting has had no effect, and it is unable to do a system restore due to this problem. i have no back-up. it also states that nothing new can be saved. any suggestions?
