is there a more functional or easier to use virtual machine?
Am using MS virtualmachine and am not having a good time..........
frankly, it's pissing me off - am trying to do something that ought to be simple and it's fighting me all the way................
I'm a patient person and can chase an issue for hours or days without feeling much frustration, but I'm about to bust a hemorrhage over this........
Am beginning to think it'd be a ton easier just to clean out one of my drives and install to that, but I didn't really want to have to move so much stuff to CD or DVD.........
breathe deeply.......... count to ten............ take a walk outside......... remember your last doobie 15 years ago and long for those days............

At the initial boot screen, did you add this parameter?

Hit the F6 key, for Options. When the line appears, at the very end type in a space (if there’s not one after the two dashes) then i8042.noloop

yes, I did the F6 (space) i8042.noloop trick - to no avail. those instructions are on the quoted webpage - and I follow instructions to a tee.
Have tried loading from a .iso or from an original disk.
Haven't a clue what to do when "the fix" doesn't work.

Thanks, Adrynalyne = am downloading now.
Am willing, at this point, to try anything.
Addendum: the download looks like UBUNTU 7:10 is already loaded in the VM?
Shoot, after all this experience I shouldn't be skeert of anything so long as I've got my software backed up on disk.
Am going, this week, to install yet another hard drive, half it, and use it for an UBUNTU/MINT runoff - I just wanted the VM experience for the sake of learning - and I won't ditch the project until I know what's going wrong.
I was the very best auto/aircraft mechanic for 30 year = didn't get to be the very best by giving up when it got tough = was famous (locally) for fixing what others had spent hours on and had given up - even dealerships brought what they couldn't figure to my shop.
Ain't gonna let a computer beat me - I always said I can fix anything another person could build - just give me time to learn the rules - shoot, I read tech manuals like others read romances or history.
Just keep prompting me - I'll get there!
    Thanks and Blessings,

yep, its already loaded into a VM. The VMware player will allow you to run it.

Am on Ubuntu 7.10 with VMware Player now - am enjoying it well, except for the VMware frame that limits my vision of the Ubuntu page by about 1/2" on all sides.
    Small complaint.
After this evening's jaunt in Ubuntuland, I'm feeling like ditching Xp for keeps = have explored available plug ins and additional software and feel that this OS offers pretty much everything I use in a computer.
Unlike people with small children (crappy hamper) I am a happy camper!
    Thanks to all who helped!
Special thanks to Adrynalyne for helping me to get to this point with reasonable confidence = but you're not off the hook yet! I'm still wet behind the earz in Linux and am certain to need help from time to time, especially in setup/making this my own.
    Again,
    Thanks and Blessings,
    Port-O-San

I had the same symptoms, until I realized there's actually 3 different times that you want to insert the i8042.noloop switch:

    1. While booting the live CD before install
    2. While booting the installed OS for the first time
    3. In /boot/grub/menu.lst for subsequent boots

I also noticed for number 3, the switch didn't take unless I put a space at the end, which the tutorial never mentioned. This has got me a Ubuntu installation working under VPC 2K7.

Also noticed that this change was blown away after doing some updates. Had to re-do it to get the mouse back under control.

Moderator: this one had some value and made VM work better, but still a P.I.T.A. despite the good intent and help. Your call..........
