loading xp into a hp omnibook 4150

I got a HP OmniBook 4150 Laptop from a friend. The harddrive in it was bad so I replaced it with a Toshiba 12.07GB harddrive. Then I tried to install XP Pro on it and it does the setup until the reboot, then when it reboots it starts all over again from the start. Then sometimes when I try to load it the screen goes blank and all it has is a blinking cursor. I tried to call HP but they want $35.00 an hour for tech support. Can anybody help? If so I will be very happy.

How far into the install are you when the computer starts to reboot? Could be a memory issue, due to if a bad chip is in it, that can cause a reboot.
Try Win2k, due to this notebook may not support WinXP. It should support Linux.

 

it reboots after it ask which partition i want to use then it runs the copying of files. Then once it goes to 100% it says that it will reboot in 15seconds. Then when it reboots it starts the whole processes all over again. If you think win 2000 will work do you know where i can get a copy of it.

 

Not sure if you tried this when it reboots but delete all the partitions and then try the install again. XP will leave install folders and something may be corrupt in them.

 

How old is the laptop?
My 5 year + old laptop BIOS will not support XP. I have to flash the BIOS to allow it to run XP. Maybe something similar on yours.
Check out every page of your BIOS to see if anything there is relevant.
Also, google "XP" and "HP OmniBook 4150" and see what results that gives. Bazza
