I had a trojan virus on my Dell laptop so I reinstalled windows to get rid of it. My memory was always almost full before because I had a lot of movies, pics, etc. however everything got deleted when I reinstalled windows so I'm not sure why it's full. I did some research and someone was having the same problem and did disc cleanup and I tried that but nothing happened. What can I do?

What procedure did you use to reinstall Windows? :)

I used the operating system cd that came with my laptop.

WinDirStat is a great free tool for examining disk space usage.

It helped me to trim down the usage on my system drive.

You can click on any portion of the image to get it's location.
You can then right-click that area and get options such as:
    • Zoom In
    • Zoom Out
    • Select child
    • Select parent

Look at the screen shot on the download page.

Also, be sure to check the Recycle Bin if you have deleted stuff.

I think I reinstalled it wrong to begin with because everything on my computer looks different. It asked me where I wanted to install windows and I had 3 options, Partition 1, 2, and 3. They were all full so I just picked Partition 2 deleted it and installed it there. Did I do something wrong? Should I have deleted all 3?

    IS this Win7?

Go to Start and type in disk management and hit enter.
You will get a graph of your HD. How big are the partitions and how are they labeled?

Ok, so I just talked to a guy from Dell and he said the problem was I didn't format the partition before installing windows. So i did what he told me and now my C drive is empty and D is completely full. :cry

    Yes, this is Windows 7.
Also now when I turn on my laptop it asks which system I want to use and gives me Windows 7 twice.

I took someone else's advice and deleted all the partitions and reinstalled Windows 7. My C drive is now empty and D disappeared completely. He said it was ok and I don't need it. Is that true? :confused

Looking at the earlier disk management you had four partitions.
The tiny OEM one is Dell diagnostics. The 100mb one is Win7 boot partition. The 14gb probably held a recovery partition for reinstalling Windows by using an F11 key or other key during the Dell screen. Since you have both overwritten and then deleted this 14gb partition you will always need your OS CD to reinstall Win7. So make sure you keep the disc safe and if it came in a little sleeve to protect it be sure to store it that way.

I'm guessing your disk management now has a 100mb partition for the Win7 boot files and a large one for the rest of Windows. That is fine. If it didn't create a 100mb boot partition that is fine also (it is optional). Just keep your reinstall disc safe.

I don't know if it will do much good but since you had so much data and some of it was large files you might want to give Recuva a quick try to see if it can find any of your old files. The files marked green can be recovered by being copied to a USB drive. Just a possibility as I am not sure how it will work due to the original partitions being deleted but if something was important to you it might be worth a look.
