Local IP keeps Changing

I have been having internet issues and noticed that the local IP address on my router which is supposed to be 192.168.1.1, keeps changing to 52.35.186.63.

I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless B broadband Router. It is attached to my modem via a cat5 connection. My PC is one of four cat 5 connections off of ports on the router. I will go into the basic setup page correct the IP address and save the configuration and within a minute, I have internet again. The time between failures varies greatly. We have managed to watch Netflix, for several hours and then have it fail. I have also had it fail within seconds of saving the configurations. I have reset the router to factory default several times. Power cycled the unit, and even moved it to where it gets better air flow. I still have issues where the router drops all internet, and I find the Local IP has changed, and its always the same IP address.

The PC I'm running off of is as antiquated as the router. It is a HP 519J.

I have read several of the other threads and really don't understand much of what is being said.

Can you help me understand what is going on please?

192.168.1.1 is your local network. The 52. IP is likely the IP address assigned to your modem by your ISP. First thing I would do is power cycle your whole network - not just the router. That is, power off your modem, router, and all connected computers. And before powering them up again, I would replace the Ethernet cable between the modem and the router - making sure you have it connected to the "Internet" or UpLink port on the router. Those cables are cheap, low-tech devices that cannot take much physical abuse - that is, they can be damaged easily.

Then power up the modem, wait for the lights to settle down. Then the router, then the connected computers.

If it keeps changing after that, your router may be failing.

One thing that is a bit odd is that 52 address resolves to the Wilmington, Delaware region but your profile location says Colorado. Are you using a proxy?

I would suspect that the roputer is failing, since we have had it for several years. I am in Colorado, and to my knowledge I'm not using a proxy. But where would I look that up in my router tables?

Is there a virus that can do this and not be detected by Avast?

It is something you would have manually set up. So if you didn't, you are not using one.
No one anti-malware program can, or should be relied on exclusively to keep you safe. So I recommend periodic supplemental scanning with Malwarebytes's Anti-Malware (MBAM) just to make sure nothing got by you or Avast. And I say "you" because it is up to the user (always the weakest link in security) to keep Windows and your security programs current, and you avoid risky behavior - like filesharing copyrighted materials (mainly tunes and videos) via torrents and P2P sites.

And note MBAM Pro plays well with other real-time (in memory) solutions too. And while I prefer (most) free anti-malware solutions over paid versions, with MBAM's relatively low initial cost and more importantly, no renewal fees, IMO, it is worth purchasing the pro version and running it full time along with your regular anti-malware solution.

Most typos I can figure out, but I since we are talking about "routers" and "computers" here, I don't know what you mean by "roputer"! ;) In any event, I sure would replace your Ethernet cables (between computer and router, and between router and modem) before buying a new router.
