Local link IP on satellite internet

    Hallo

I use satellite internet. I used to connect directly to a hub in USA (I am in Africa) I had an Idirect 3000 modem. My ISP changed the modem to an Idirect Evolution X1 and pointed my dish to Amos 5, a month ago.

Since then I struggle to get my e mail to load fully and use it. Some sites and forums I used to frequent give me a "forbidden" message, or I get "Internet explorer cannot access the page" I cannot connect to my Lynksys router. The chap who installed the new modem, gave me a new user name and password for my Lynksys, he did not however inform me that I would no longer be able to use it. I was only told that by my ISP support when I contacted them about the problem.

When I looked up the IP I was given, it said it was a Local Link IP, owned by an ISP that leases out lines, located in Durban South Africa, with 64 000 odd users connections to it.

I would like to know if anyone can tell me if this could be the cause of the problems I am experiencing. I am supposed to be on a contention of 15 to 1 , 128/128kbps and have a committed CIR of 9 , which most of the time I am not getting when I do speed tests. Can my ISP ensure I am on a contention of 15 to one when they are leasing a Local Link IP?

The fact that the guy in support was not answering my direct questions about the above, nor telling me if my modem was locked or not, is making me feel uncomfortable about the whole new set up. I am currently paying US$235 per month for a service that is not what it used to be. I paid in full for the original modem, and was told that they had to replace it as they were connecting to a new satellite that would improve the service.

    Any info would be welcome.

Hi Tadpole and the rest of the forum.

Sorry for signing up on the whim. I am not meaning to be intrusive, but I saw your question on here via my Google Alerts. I work with Bentley Walker thought I might be of help. I hope this isn't a problem, just trying to help a forum member out! :)

I believe that this will be bandwidth related. You say that you are using 128/128 with a contention ratio of 15:1, and so; you will be sharing 128/128 with 15 other users. Below are the worse case scenario throughputs (if all 15 users are online and the ISP has good controls in place):

    8.53Kbps / 8.53 Kbps

Even at 128/128 CIR (dedicated) you would struggle to browse most heavy websites now, usually these types of bandwidth plans are used for small data requirements such as ATM machine transactions etc.

    Hope that's of some help.

    Hi Dan

Sorry to have taken so long to reply. My ISP cut me off because I refused to pay my sub , until they had got my service back to what it was before their upgrade. I am very grateful to you for taking the time to sign up and reply. We need someone on this forum with satellite internet knowledge!

I have been on the 128/128 contention 15:1 for 4 years, and am resigned to how slow browsing is. It is since the upgrade that I have run into problems not experienced before. Can a Local Link ip downgrade the speed, compared to connecting directly to a hub? It now takes 5mins for my email to load fully so I can use it. Some sites do not load at all, and others that I used to frequent, tell me I am forbidden access.
