hi. i was succesful (thanks to some of you) in sharing my internet connection through a router that i bought today....because it was recommended to me.

    now comes the next dilema.

how do i configure my computers so they can communicate with each other through the network.

one is running windows XP and is connected wirelessly to a router.

the other is running windows ME and is connected to the router through an ethernet cable

the one with Xp seems to acknoledge the existance of the other computer in the network...but cant access it. the one with windows ME says it cant log on the the network (or something along those lines).

can someone help me figure out how to get these two machines to communicate?

i tried so many things...with no luck

PS. do i need to give them static IP addresses?

thanks and best regards to you all.

How ya doing :D I'm glad your Router worked out for you, and both computers can get online. To answer some of the above questions:

    1. You do not need to change IP addresses on either machine, they both get network IP's from the router.
    2. To get both computers setup so that they can see each other, perform the Small and Home Office Networking Wizard on your Windows XP computer. You can find this wizard in a number of ways, but the easiest is to open up your Control Panel, and double click Network Connections. The link to the SOHO Wizard is in the left panel of the window. Follow the wizard, and find the connection setup that works best for you networking configuration. Once that's done, take your XP cd, and insert into the ME computer. Wait for the auto run to kick in, and then choose Perform Additional Tasks option. Then perform the same wizard on the ME machine, reboot as necessary, and after that you should be able to move files between both computers :)

thank you for replying ICEMAN i tried that many many times...even after i read what you wrote....with no luck

im using a disk that network setup wizzard made on the windows XP computer because I didnt get a windows XP CD. I have some startup recovery disks though.

anyway, i got a direct connection yesterday when i set up static IP's (like someone told me to do when using a switch) . I wasnt using the router yesterday....but now the that I am the computers dont detect each other...

when i go to network places and click on "entire network" it says there is no connection.

by the way im running zonealarm on both PC's ...could that be a problem?

anymore help would be welcomed and appreciated.

    good day

one last thing...i disabled zonealarm to get my network going.

    is the router firewall enough?

i noticed the page you linked me to said you can cofigure it so you can allow zonealrm to run...but i still havent figured out how...do i have to buy zonealrm pro to do that?
