    Hi,
I downloaded a file to help clear my registry from this site (cant remember which program i downloaded as i cant check or remove it now as i have been locked out of the computer, so now i cant use ANY admin tools such as system restore, or remove programs, defrag etc:mad: how can i sort this problem? the computer asks for a password which i did NOT put into it:eek: i can still use the computer but not for housekeeping. It did ask when downloading that some programs on windows will be replaced, and thinking this was normal said yes, thats when the problem started
    HELP!

I think a few more details are needed, such as which Operating System you're using (Win98, ME, XP, etc). When does it ask you for a password? During log-on at boot up? How are you bypassing it to use the computer (I'm assuming you're getting past it since you said you can still use the computer to an extent)? If you can get into the computer, you should be able to go into whatever your regular "download" folder is & see what program it was you downloaded. Most of them have a "restore" feature you can run to roll back any changes it made.

It sounds like you don't have a local admin account, correct?

If so, buy the Winternals software and use the Locksmith included with it to reset your admin account password.

Using xp, its wierd but i can use the computer, just not use any admin facilities, so i cannot use the system restore or defrag or remove programs etc, i havent got silly money to take it to someone to fix or pay big bucks for a program which i will probably use only once:confused: the program i downloaded has alot to answer for, as i never had passwords on my computer before this, so obviously the program has put one on

    Whats the program you downloaded?

as you said you cannot remove it it should be still in the Programs List or Program Files folder as Wavetar said above, plus he has asked many questions that need answering so we can help

For future reference, always know what a program is and does before you run it, and always read what it's doing before you click "ok" Since you have no idea what the program is, or what it was intended to do aside from clean your registry, you can't really complain it did something you didn't intend.

Did you try the "usual suspects" for program generated passwords, like "admin" "administrator" "user" and "anonymous" If you did not fill in the password yourself, as you say you didn't, then it should be whatever default password the program assigns. This is generally contained in the program's "read me" file.

And to clarify, is the password on the windows account itself (ie does it ask you for a password at the windows xp login screen) or is it attached to various functions (like you click defrag and it request a password)

I am very leery about giving recommendations on how to bypass system and program passwords since there are very legitimate reasons people use those programs and very nefarious reasons people can have for wanting to get past the passwords.

Have you looked in Add/Remove, your Program Folders and your Start Menu?

It asks for password on startup, i press ok without entering anything and it lets me do all but admin stuff, when i hit defrag or system restore it just does nothing.
I tried the passwords such as admin, user etc, but no joy, i cannot remove programs. I think i am stuffed, and have to bite the bullet and pay someone.
