I'm running XP and at some point under the influence of a few beers managed to get a start up notice when either myself or other accounts log on. This has text I have written in and is causing no issues with start up other than I'm board with it and cant for the life of me remember how I got it on in the first place. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

does it come up before or after you log on? if its after, sorry i have no idea. but if its before you log on i think i know what it is because i have that on mine as well as around the campus i admin. the campus security warning is pushed by group policy, the one at my house was from a registry entry i made.

It isn't a legal notice, I log in and up pops a notice window with text I have written. I hit close and windows continues to load. This also happens when I turn on the computer or other accounts log on.

Is this in your startup list in msconfig?

Have you tried using a startup manager?

I have checked msconfig and start up manager, nothing out of place?

Please confirm whether the offending text appears before or after you enter the login information.

My registry hack does the former, although the text canbe anything, not just legal.

Have you ever run a program like Logon-Studio, which can do the latter?

    A screenshot would be useful.

When I turn on the computer windows loads and just before the accounts screen is displayed a box in the centre of the screen with notice written along the top appears. In the box is text I have written. Nothing will happen until I hit OK then I'm onto the accounts screen. When I log onto any account the same screen appears and log on will not continue again until OK is hit. Once logged on when I flip between already open accounts the notice screen will not appear, only initial start up.

How do I take a screen shot?

    Well there you are then.

Microsoft has made provision for institutions to add a message prior to logging on.

I have attached a picture of one used at Studio T. You can'tuse the usual screen capture before Windows starts so I have simply photographed it.

The registry key I mention has two sub keys.

    HKLM/.../Legalnoticecaption
This is the title of the box

    HKLM/.../Legalnoticetext
This is the text displayed in the box

Both can display any text desired and may be found where I originally stated in my first post in this thread.

    Did you look?

You are right about the notice.

I know I'm being a bit thick on this but could you give me a bit more advice on looking for your original post - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Currentversion\winlogon\legal notice.

I have looked in the startup manager but think I'm looking in the wrong place.

Please see picture below from startup manager main and notice.

I don't know how you got it there but you need to edit the registry.

    Logon as an administrator.

First back up the registry by setting a restore point in system restore.

The type into the run box

    regedit

An explorer like two pane window will open.

You must be very careful what you do here as you there is no 'undo' in regedit.

If the tree is not compacted scroll up to the top and click on my computer so the right hand pane is blank.

You will see 5 folders in the left hand pane

expand the third one HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE (HKLM)

    Expand software
    Expand microsoft
Expand windowsNT (yes it's still there in XP)
    Expand current version
    Expand winlogon

In the right hand pane you will see 'legalnotice text' and 'legalnoticecaption' in the list.
Right click on each and choose modify to change the text.
Delete the entire entry including the quotes for each.
Do them in the order text, then caption.

Do not alter any other setting in the registry without further help.

    Close regedit you are done.

    Restart the pc.

I have appended a pic to help.

Fantastic - I cant thank you enough.

Lesson learnt, stop changing things after a few beers.

Really do appreciate you taking the time and effort to help out.

    Good luck.
