whenever i try to logon to windows it is sucsessfull but immeadeatly logs off the computer
i tryed to start in every type of safe mode possible but i get the same result.
i was following registry edit advice from http://rahulhackingarticles.wetpaint.com/page/Top+Tricks+n+Cheats

the first edit i did was to decrease the shutdown time.
these are the exact instructions straight from the website

    "Start Regedit.
    Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SYSTEM/CurrentControlSet/Control.
    Click on the "Control" Folder.
    Select "WaitToKillServiceTimeout"
Right click on it and select Modify.
Set it a value lower than 2000
    "

    mine is set to 200

then i decreased the "startbar menu display time?"

    "Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Select MenuShowDelay from the list on the right.

Right on it and select Modify.
    Change the value to 0.
    Reboot your computer.
    "

finally i decreased the loading time of adobe acrobat reader

"1. Go to the installation folder of acrobat reader
    (C:\program files\adobe\acrobat\reader\.. whatever)

    2. Move all the files and folders from the "plugins" directory to the "Optional" directory. (I repeat.. cut and paste the files NOT copy & paste).
    "

the effect didnt kick in untill i restarted my computer in the second edit

any advice at all would be greatly appricated

ps: how do you turn off overwrite in the thread posting things. it is very annoying.

At the top of the page you will see a post from an individual that has the same problem as yours.

Don't go to the bottom of the page, scroll til just past the blue area entitled "Ask An Expert Now".

Right after the blue area is the start of the discussion of how to resolve the issue.

By the way, my son is in a band. He thinks your user name would be a great name for a Heavy Metal band! :)

oh sry and i just ended up reinstalling xp anyway but this all happened like 6 months ago

it turned out that spybot search and destroy accidently deleted an infected vital registry key

    thanks though

I've seen this same type of problem but it was spyware related, something called 'omniband' I think. It creates a file called wsaupdater.exe and it messes with the userinit.exe file, and with the logon registry keys, so when the spyware is removed, you can't logon. Did you recently run AdAware SE or a different spy remover? Here's the link to the fix-it procedure. You'll need your XP CD so you can enter the Recovery Console.
http://www.winxptutor.com/wsaremove.htm Scroll down 'til you see some blue print about the 'log-on log-off issue'. Then scroll back up for the registry key you'll need to edit.
Read the info and follow the steps. It's worked for me in the past. GOOD LUCK!

If this doesn't work, a visit to the malware removal forum and reading the stickies is probably a good idea.
