login password if forgotten ?

Hi,

just set up laptop for the kids and they all want to put on a password, so what happens if either they forget or put in the wrong password ? they all have a limited account !

also if they try to get into my account and keep putting in the wrong password what happens ? am i locked out for ever ?

I know its a basic question so sorry, but I dont know if its a good idea for them to have a password....

If it were to be a case then you could use Ophcrack.

There also videos on YouTube on how to use Ophcrack.

but, do I get locked out if they do put in the wrong password etc do i have to crack all the passwords etc

You can get locked out only in case if kids are to discover your administrative password and then change it.

As an administrator you can change passwords on lesser type of accounts, but a limited account user cannot change administrative password.

 

Thanks again, one last question though...

IF the kids on there limited account forget or keep putting in the wrong password what happens to there account, do they get locked out etc or loose there account...how many times do they get before all is lost.

richdio:- The easiest way to do this is to create yourself an admin account. From there you delete and re-create accounts if passwords are forgotton.

Don't worry about them trying to crack your password. Nothing will happen!

 

As an administrator you can change or delete passwords on limited accounts without knowing these passwords. And there is no self-destruct like feature so that if you enter a certain amount of invalid passwords you are locked out forever.

Also, on limited account when you go to Control Panel -> User Accounts, you will not see administrative user listed there to be able to change his password. But by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del, and selecting Change Password, a limited user can type in the administrative user name and old password, and thus is able to create a new password. Just something to bear in mind.

Yes, anyone who can boot from ophcrack LiveCD (it must be possible to put this LiveCD on a USB stick as well), may gain access to your Windows password protected account.

Just passing noticed your post, dont forget to set the kids account to user cannot change password, do this in your admin account for the kids one. Then they cant change it and shouldnt forget it. If using Xp can also create a password backup disc. press F1 on your desktop and type in the search area passwords and follow your nose from there.

 

You can also password protect the PC BIOS. This is where someone would set the first boot device. If you set it to 'Hard Drive', nobody can boot to a CD unless they enter the BIOS password and change the boot order. This way you wouldn't have to worry about anyone booting to a CD or USB stick that can change admin account passwords. Just DO NOT forget the password!!!
