Hi all, I recently installed Debian GNU/Linux on an old pc to create a music and printing server. I configured some things using the GUI desktop environment with a monitor and keyboard at home.

Now I'm back at school without a monitor, mouse or keyboard and I would like to finish the configuration using remote logins (over a router). I've been using ssh, but there's only so much that my skill level allows for with a command line interface. So I've been trying to use vnc.

At home, I was able to successfully use VNC. I would sit down at the attached keyboard, login at the welcome screen, and then walk over to my laptop and connect with vnc.

Obviously, this technique is useless to me at school. What I really need is a) a way to get the vnc server to startup without loging in or b) a way to make debian automatically login to the GUI under my user name at boot.

Until I have that, I'm stuck using command line. Any ideas?

I have tried giving the terminal commands "vncserver," "vnc4server," as well as (at a friends recommendation "vncserver -depth 24 -geometry 1024x768" and "vnc4server -depth 24 -geometry 1024x768." None of these commands work and I still receive the error message "unable to connect to host: Connection refused (10061)."
