login to wrong profile

I had a problem with Acrobat PDF and I tried to use system restore to fix it. After the restore operation completed (I backed it up one day's worth) when I logged in it took me to a new profile. I reversed the system restore and it was still going to the wrong profile. I shut down the system for about a half and hour and restarted - no change. I examined the Documents and Settings folder and it apparently created a new profile to which it is going now. I examined my old profile and it seemed that it was still intact. I don't know what would happened if I tried to delete the profile that shouldn't be there. It may not be easily done. How would I re associate my login to my correct profile. I have XP pro. I have spybot and trend antivirus and I keep the system pretty clean.

 

If Windows XP automatically created a new profile that pretty much means some or all of the registry file for that user (NTUser.dat) at the root of te user folder under "Documents and Settings" was hosed. There should be a NTUser.bak file which is the backup of that but the system still may not be able to re-surrect that old profile again.

I would salvage all files from that profile then delete it and continue using the current, healthy profile.

To delete the old profile properly: Start > Run > sysdm.cpl > OK > Advanced > User Profile (in the middle) > Settings.

 

Thanks Turcoloco I rebuilt the new profile as best I can. This happened on the computer I use at work and I rarely back it up completely, that should teach me.
