Logitech Pro 9000 Installation problem

I have been trying to install a Logitech Pro 9000 webcam on a Gateway GT4106 computer running Windows XP Media Center (with SP3 and all other critical updates) with an AMD Athlon 64 3700+ processor. Have been working with Logitech support for more than 3 weeks and getting nowhere.

Problem is that after completing apparently successful installation, when I start the program, it says there is no camera, and the camera produces no image. There is a point during installation when the camera is to be plugged into a USB port. Both the computer and then the program recognize the camera, and an image shows up properly. Then upon "finish" and trying to open the program thereafter, no image and a note saying that either there is no camera or it is not working properly. Checking through "add hardware" ultimately finds the camera and mic and says each is working properly. I have downloaded anew the program _ qc1150 _ it's the same as in available for download here, same version numbers and download size _ and uninstalled and reinstalled several times, including doing a "clean boot" between uninstall and reinstall.

I have installed the same program on an older slower eMachines T4510 running Win XP Home, also with SP3, and an Intel Pentium 4 processor, where it works perfectly. The eMachines unit is 32-bit.

I had thought the Gateway was 64-bit but apparently it is not. In any event, the Logitech qc1150 program for 64-bit said it is not suitable for that machine when I tried installation.

Latest Logictech support suggestion is: "try installing software in different administrator account and see if it works. ... by trying on different administrator account you can identify if there is any software conflict." I have told him I don't understand that recommendation, that is, don't know what "a dffierent administrator account" would be, don't know how to do it, and have asked for how-to instruction without getting a reply.

Y'all got any ideas, suggestions, questions for me?

BTW, I'm on dial-up still. *sigh*

Think what they're saying is create another Admin acct., login to the new acct. and try to install with that acct. to see if a clean acct. will work.

    http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/winxp/accounts.mspx

In step 5. Click, Computer Administrator instead of Limited.

BUT before you try above I see they have a desktop manager available for the 9000, might try that and see if it will help you troubleshoot the issue.

"is a free service designed to deliver software support" and available in downloads at Logitech, same place you got the software. http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/435/3056&cl=us,en?softwareid=698&osid=1

*I'm assuming you download the correct 32bit software and installed that already.

    Also, I don't see a GT4106 for gateway...

Many thanks for the suggestions. I've been awake too long so about to crash but can respond to some of this. First, there's a typo in the Gateway model number, s/b GT4016. Re proper 32-bit program _ 1st, I used the CD that came with webcam. When I ran into problem, I went looking to support and found the online version and downloaded and tried it, then, Logitech supplied a URL _ turned out to be the same thing BUT I downloaded yet again as a precaution _ no use asking for help and not doing what's suggested. In fact, I actually did it yet again later, as a further precaution against having had some gremlin sneak in. Since that program works on the other WinXP computer, seems pretty unlikely there was something awry within all the downloads.

After a bit of sleep, I'll try the desktop manager _ you said manager, but I think you meant "messenger"; that's what I see there _ and then, if still needed, creating another admin account and tryiing a new install. and we'll see what's what . Tnx again.

This so-called Media Center unit has been a bit weird from the get-go, requiring several start-from-scratch OS reinstallations _ horrible chore with mere dial-up. but that's a separate story (I think; I hope! LOL)

Yes Earsz, it does say messenger - sorry my bad, but that is the correct program to try.

Wellll, instead of going to sleep, I uninstalled Logitech, did a clean boot, created an additional admin account, installed Logitech Desktop Messenger, and reinstalled the QuickCam program via the new admin account. And guess what _ it STILL didn't work. Behavior was totally as previously described _ fine image during the installation process, "no cam or it isn't working properly" thereafter.

BUT, I did discover something different. My previous admin account doesn't provide a shortcut to open Media Center. In the new one, clicking Start opens a pop-up menu in which a Media Center short cut is one of the options. There is none such in the old admin account Start menu.

However -- the shortcut doesn't work. Clicking it produces an error message reading:
"Strong name validation failed for assembly 'C:\Windows\ehome\ehshell.exe'. The file may have been tampered with or it was partially signed but not fully signed with the correct private key."

Closing that brings up another error message reading: "Application has generated an exception that could not be handled. Process id=0x184c (6220), Thread id=0x1850
(6224). Click OK to erminate the application. Click cancel to debug the application."

And clicking CANCEL leads to: "Registered JIT debugger is not available. An attempt to launch a JIT debugger with the following command resulted in an error code of 0x2 (2). Please check computer settings.
    cordbg.exe !a 0x184c
Click on Retry to have the process wait while attching a debugger manually. Click on Cancel to abort the JIT debug request."

Tnx, Cat. Was so wiped ydy I cloudln't think further. I'll look thru all of the posts at that URL ... already see there is a problem finding one of the downloads ... but that certainly deals with the same stuff. And yes, I have SP3 on the Media Center computer. (Also have SP3 on the XP Home computer without any Logitech or other problem, so am guessing this is particular to Win Media Center.)

Will get back to this later.

Re: Logitech Pro 9000 Installation/SP3 _ Media Center conflict

What had seemed to be a problem with a Logitech nstallation proved to be a problem of SP3 and Media Center conflict.

I spent 3 hours today (Thur, 31st) working with MS SP3 suport center techs on the "strong name validation" problem. basically the results boiled down to 2 things: a file to which I was directed on the net by URL, called MceRepair_02.zip ... NOT an MS file or MS site but some individual's ... and uninstalling XP MCE 2005 Rollup 2. The latter worked for me in re-enabling Media Center, and the MS tech said flatly "well, we now know that SP3 won't work with Rollup 2." He also said not to reinstall Rollup 2 pending a possible MS fix.

That other file: It pretty much runs through unregistering and re-registering just about everything in the Windows/ehome folder, best I could tell. It is more extensive by far than the other Mce-registering recommendation that's perhaps a dozen lines long. My chat connection was broken off inadvertently at that time without an opportunity to save a transcript or the URL to which I had been directed and from which I downloaded the file. I asked the tech what it was doing, and he gave me a multi-phrase anser, but of course I don't have that now, either. Nor can I find that file again via net searching. I have the file, however; I extracted its content and ran it, and it didn't seem to help. However, I also didn't reboot at that point, since the "chat" with the tech agent was continuing.

When rebooting later after the Rollup 2 removal, several of the files in the ehome folder ran during the boot up ... including ehshell.exe and medctrro among others, and I don't know what occasioned their having done so, the Rollup 2 removal or the MceRepair_02.

I turned to the SP3 support center after extensive net searching for solutions and having found many possiblities, but none that worked for me.

I still have a problem with installing a Logitech webcam, but Media Center is "fixed" _ without Rollup 2, of course. One can hope MS will provide still a later fix which will provide the various fixes of Rollup 2 in such a way that they will work with SP3.

MceRepair_02 is a small file, only about 21 Kb in ZIP and about 75 Kb in full, easy to email if someone wants it.

Glad you found a fix, sorry about the webcam though.

    I just had an afterthought.
maybe you have done this if not give it a try.

click "start/my computer" and in the left pane in system tasks click "view system information" this brings up a new window, click the "hardware tab" and you should see device manager click on that and find your webcam in the list, double click it and it should give you the option to update,if you click that it will go online and find the newest driver for it?

no guarantee but it may just help you with the problem.

3 cheers! AS of tonight, Logitech has solved the problem. the support arm advised that I update the Quickcam 9000 Pro program with 18.9 (the previous latest had been 18.8) _ and hey, presto, the webcam now works with this system (Win XP Media Center with SP3). The update was obtained via the program's update function. That approach doesn't allow one to save the update file separately but rather goes directly into its installation.

Took quite a few months to get this issue resolved, but bully for Logitech for hanging in there and prevailing.

Just noticed that the official Logictech support download site for this webcam still has only 11.8 as the latest program update. How odd.
