Logitech webcam not 'seen' when plugged in

I bought a Logitech Webcam C250 recently. When I first plugged in the USB cable the system recognised that something was plugged in because an alert sounded, but it didn't trigger the Found New Hardware Wizard.

I unplugged the webcam and tried to install the device from the Logitech disk. I came to the screen asking me to plug in the USB cable, which I did..and waited...and waited, but nothing changed it just kept on asking me to plug it in. So I tried different USB sockets (ones that were definitely working okay). Still no change. I clicked 'Skip' to complete the software installation. The software is now installed but the system cannot 'see' the webcam. The Logitech dashboard tells me that there's no webcam to be found and invites reconnection. But clicking 'Reconnect' does nothing.

What can I try to solve the problem?

System information: Windows xp Home edition version 2002 SP3.
    Intel CPU 2140 @ 1.60GHz
Gigabyte Intel 945 S-series motherboard utility

Usually with USB devices, especially printers, it is stressed to install the software before plugging in the device. You did it backwards and I suspect that created a problem.
Contact Logitech support and ask how you can cleanly "uninstall" the webcam that is not detected, telling them that it was plugged in before the software was installed.

Thanks, plodr. With this in mind I wondered whether doing a system restore to the point before the Logitech software was installed would solve the problem. But System Restore did not allow the restoration to that point, or to various other earlier points I tried.

I have sent a message to Logitech customer support. If I get a reply that works for me I'll post it here for others to see.

System Restore can be flaky on XP, it can fail today but work tomorrow - try it again :).

Did you ever come to a resolution with this problem? I'm having the same issue, and everything I try, I still cannot get my webcam to work.

Yes I did eventually get it sorted. I turned out that there were some generic camera and microphone setup files that the were in the wrong folder on my system. So they couldn't be found in the installation process. It was looking at the setup log that showed what the problem was. When I moved the files to the right place it all worked OK.
