Logon as Administrator

I am trying to update my OS and for some reason WIndows Update always fails on a required download.

I then try to load a bunch of updates individualy by downloading the file but whenever I try to intall it I get a message saying I must be loged on as the administrator in order to do it.

I don't get it. I am the only one who uses the machine I am the administrator or so I thought.

How do I log on as an administrator? There is only one option and that is me.
How do I get the machine to logon to admin instead of me?

Try dial-a-fix:

Execute dial-a-fix, then click the green check box. Then press "GO".

If something comes up asking if you to do a reboot, just press yes.

Do the dial a fix as I typed above, and if the same question about a reboot happens with the same process happens, click no, and continue.

After all this is done, go back to the windows updates and try again.

Also, what error are ye getting? Any error codes?

 

When I reboot into Safe Mode, I have a usable account named "ADMINISTRATOR". You could try using that account [if you have it].

I am not getting any error codes. I attempt to do a Windows Update. WU starts downloading 4 required files. One of the four required files fails during install. Each subsequent attempt merely displays a box saying that the update failed (for that file).

So was attempting to install updates manully but I get the admin error.

No other error codes.

I'll go back to the other machine and get the name of the update that won't update.

Oh yeah I attempted to downloaed the file and install it from my machine. I then get a "The file is corrupt" message.

I'll come back with more details but in the meantime I will try the dial a fix

 

when you get to the logon screen just after you start your computer before you click on your name to login press CTRL + ALT + DEL twice (but not in quick succession) now you should be in a logon screen where you have to type your name. In the user name box type "Administrator" and then the pass word and like magic you are logged on as admin. Now see if your problem continues.

 

I will try that as well Gos except that my machine boots directly to my desktop. I do not get the Logon screen. I do recall there is a way to change that but heck if I can remeber.

Also the Update that will not load is KB842773 Background Ingelligent Transfer Service and WinHTTP5.1

 

To change that you need to add a password or another user. IMO just add a password to your account and then when you are finished remove it. To add a password go Start->Contol Panel->User Accounts (oops) click on your account and then Add a password. That'll be two beers. ;-p

 

Oh and BTW when you are in the User Accounts window check your account and see what it says it should say something like computer administrator under your name.

 

You can get the login screen by doing any of the following options:

a) Click on start menu and click Log Off. Or,
b) Click Ctrl + Alt + Del and click Log Off.

Try logon as Administrator. I believe you know the password of administrator account.
