Logon to Windows Mail - Vista

Yesterday I did some (possibly over-enthusiastic!) disc cleaning.

Today, on logging on to Windows Mail it asks me every time for Username and Password. This despite 'Remember my credentials' being ticked.

I guess somewhere among the files I sent to Recycle bin was one which should have stayed in place.

Is there a way I can get back to normal, without restoring everything in Recycle Bin?

I run Vista Ultimate 64 bit.

I have checked the posts above, and tried deleting and re-setting my mail account - still no joy.

I can still access my mail, but only by re-entering username and password every time, which I do not want to have to do.

Here's a number of possible solutions, all utilizing Internet Explorer 8:

First, in Internet Explorer go to Tools, Internet Options, Content, AutoComplete, and in the Forms section: UNcheck “Save names and passwords “ and "Ask me before saving passwords," and Apply. Close all IE sites that are open, and then re-open IE. Re-set both IE boxes to save passwords and Ask me before saving passwords. Apply.

If that doesn't solve the problem, log into the site with the login problem. From that site, in IE, choose Tools, Internet Options, Privacy, Advanced, click "Override automatic cooking handling" and select "Always allow session cookies." OK. Close out the window and close IE. Reopen IE and return to the site that you logged into, it should be fixed (it should have remembered your login info). If so, you can, if you wish, go back and deselect the "Override automatic cookie handling."

If that doesn't solve the problem, in IE, try adding the site to your Trusted Sites and/or Local Intranet. Go to Tools, Internet Options, Security, click on Internet or Local Intranet, Sites, Advanced, put in the website's address and select Add. Then 'Apply' the changes, close and restart IE8. (If it doesn't work with Internet, try adding the address to Local Intranet.)

Then, go to the Tools menu, Internet Options, and Security. Select the Internet icon so that it is highlighted. Click the Custom Level button, opening the Security Settings window for the Internet zone. Scroll down the window until you see the User Authentication section (at the bottom). Under Logon, select the option for Automatic logon with current username and password. Click the OK button. You will then be prompted to confirm changing the settings for this zone. Click Yes.

Thanks for replying. However, I don't seem to get anywhere.

First thing I hit, on calling IE (I use Firefox as my default browser) was a message that

'A program on your computer has corrupted your default search provider for Internet Explorer.

IE has reset this setting to your original search provider Search (search.myheritage.com).

IE will now open Search Settings, where you can change this setting or install more search providers.'

Whatever I do, whatever I try, when I log off IE and reload it, I get the same thing. Seems search.myheritage.com has well and truly hijacked IE. I did use this Search thing, ages ago, but didn't want it,and thought i had got rid of it. Seems not.

Then - I tried to work through your suggestions. Which seem a bit strange - my problem is with Windows Mail, the email client, not with IE. But hey - I guess you know more than me, so I'll try ...

The dialogue boxes I see are not exactly what you refer to in para. 1. I see 'Use Autocomplete for ... (and, lower down) User names and passwords on forms' and 'Ask me before saving passwords.' Assuming these to be what you intended, I unticked, closed, reopened, reticked both boxes, then went to check Windows Mail. No change - still demands username & password. I wonder if you are looking at XP, and me at Vista, or some such?

Second para. I don't understand - it isn't a site I am having a problem with - it's my email client. And, I don't see how, in Windows Mail I can 'in IE, Choose tools --- etc' as you suggest.

The same applies to the rest of your suggestion. I'm afraid it looks like I didn't describe the problem accurately enough, and we are barking up the wrong tree.

(The thing about the default search provider is a minor pain, but as I use Firefox almost exclusively, I guess I can live with that one :( )

Sorry the suggestions didn't help. My thinking was that since Windows Mail is a Microsoft app, as is IE, that fixing the problem in Microsoft's IE could possibly also fix it in the other Microsoft apps, like Mail, as well.

Also, just to let you know, yes, I too have Vista, and the IE suggestions were all for version 8 of IE. If you were dealing with an earlier version, there would be a similar, but not exactly the same procedure for addressing the problem.

I'm curious about Windows Mail. I use Windows Live Mail, and it is definitely a "site" that I access via IE. Therefore I have all of the same toolbar buttons and options as anywhere else in IE. Isn't Windows Mail also a site that you access through your browser, i.e. FireFox? If so, then you can also access it through IE, and it would have Tools, Internet Options, etc available to use.

@Imperfect1 - Windows Mail is a conventional email client, just like Outlook Express, and never accessed via a browser

@DaveRM - the most obvious thing to try is System Restore to the day before yesterday, though if you've deleted a lot of files it may not work.

    Don'tcha just hate computers sometimes?

Before I posted my original request for help, I had restarted a couple of times, because that often fixes faults. It didn't, so I appealed to MG.

My anti-virus is set to run a scan at the end of the evening then shut down. It did so, and found nothing to report.

This morning, everything works as per spec!!

Thanks for your contributions, Earthling and Imperfect1 - much appreciated.

I'm just left feeling like a fool!! :-o
