    Hey I got infected with 'Windows XP recovery' and all my desktop items dissapeared including the recycle bin and 95% of the shortcuts in the 'All Programs' list dissapeared. I went through the malware guide. First I had to run SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes in safe mode, and after doing that windows xp recovery seems to have went away. I was still missing most of desktop items and All Programs shortcuts. I ran both SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes again in normal mode cause I heard they scan better in normal mode. Nothing was found that time round. Ive attached both the safemode logs and the normal mode logs (A number 2 is in the title of the normal mode logs).
    I ran combofix and that brought back a few more desktop items, altho some are faded, and a few more All Programs shortcuts but a large majority is still missing. I ran Root Repeal and I got an error message at the start saying "invalid PE image found". It seems to have scanned fine apart from that. I tried to get the log from MGTools but when i double clicked the .exe file which I had saved in C:// all that happened was a black window quickly flashed. I did see that there was a MGTools folder though. I couldnt find MGlogs.zip in the MGlogs folder however so I dont have that log to post.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Damres.

    Let's see if we can get MGTools to run;

    Please click Start, Run, and enter cmd and click OK. This will open a command prompt window. Enter the below commands at the command prompt each followed by the enter key. The bold black are commands. The purple is merely informational.
    cd \MGtools <-- this changes to the MGtools folder and the prompt should change to C:\MGtools>
    GetRunKey <-- this will try to run all one scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.
    ShowNew <-- this will try to run all another scan from MGtools. Tell me what error messages, if any, you see.

    The files exist, as shown in your screenshot. Run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it and tell me what happens.

    As before a black window flashes very quick, I managed to capture it with print screen n this is what I got.
    should I try to download MGtools again?

    Hey I redownloaded MGtools and this time it worked. When it was running I got an error message regarding processdll.exe
    Im also occasionally getting error messages about "CCC.exe", saying application has generated an exception that could not be handled. No idea what this means.
    Ive attached the MGtools log, any advice/ help would be really appreciated thanks

    Use windows explorer and tell me if your programs are listed under:
    D:\Documents and Settings\All Users

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the previous file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista or Win7, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).Make sure that you watch for the license agreement for TrendMicro HijackThis and click on the Accept button TWICE to accept ( yes twice ).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Hey, thanks for that, the pc seems to be fine now.
    that 'unhide' program worked after I scanned the computer with malwarebytes again.
    My D:// seems to contain a lot more content than I remember it doing so before though, Ive added a screenshot of it. Does it look normal to you or could it be files left over from the viruses/spyware?
    Also I have a question about system restore. If I have a restore point that is pre infection and the computer becomes infected will restoring it to that point help at all or will the spyware/virus remain on the computer. Ive not tried using system restore in ages as I remember having error problems with it in the past and im wondering how useful it actually is.
    Much thanks for the help so far, the new logs are attached.

    Good to know things are working well now. That screen shot is a little hard to see, but it looks like what you are seeing are saved files from messenger.

    For the most part, doing a restore to before your infection can get you back to a clean slate. But you still need to scan the restore point as some malware will be on your system for a while before it becomes noticeable to you. But a restore can sometimes alleviate the worst symptoms. However, much malware these days will stop you from being able to use system restore.

    Use windows explorer to find and delete:
    D:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\hBiCdHgMgMk06511

    Now that you are clean, it would be a good time to install SP3 for added security.

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.We recommend them for doing backup scans when you suspect a malware infection.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /uninstall
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /uninstall, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

    3. Go back to step 6 of the READ ME and renable your Disk Emulation software with Defogger if you had disabled it.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Win 7, Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures pointed to by step 7 of the READ ME
        for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
