lol, strange cable

so i have quite a huge collection of cables, and i was sorting through them yesterday to see which ones i could sell. i found this weird one where its a serial connector on one end and a cat5(? ethernet) connector on the other end.

what could this be used for? i tried to connect the serial end to my computer and the ethernet end to the router, but nothing happened. is there some software that has to be used to provide an ethernet over serial connection?

Hi Spec,

My guess is that is a Serial to Ethernet converter. I would also guess that there would have to be software to complete the conversion. Google for Serial to Ethernet and see what comes up. I also have a large drawer full of cables and I think I also have one like that. Don't know where I got it and never needed to use it.

no software is needed, I use telnet (notice the cisco label?)

 

Cisco DB9 to RJ45 Console Cable. Used for initial setup for some Cisco routers. Also you can change the password on the router if you need to.

LOL, I had to google to verify the DB9 name, I knew it was a Cisco console cable, I use them on my Cisco router and switch...
