Where I live I can't get High speed internet. My mom however live .8 of a mile away and has high speed. She said she has seen a thing on craigslist that says if I hook it up at my house, and point it at her house I can pick up her network and use her internet. I'm looking at some of these devices on amazon, but iI'm not sure that I'm looking at the right thing. Can any one help my out?. Here is a link to the one I'm looking at.

I believe it is illegal to share an internet connection and if your mother's ISP finds out, she could get into trouble.

That said, you would want an antenna like this. You will need an extension cable to go from the antenna to your house. You would also need a more powerful wireless adapter like this. If there are buildings blocking the line of sight, I do not think it will work.

And how would I know if I need a 900 MHz, 2.4 GHz, 3.5 GHz, 4.9 GHz, 5.8 GHz or which antenna I would need?

If the router is 2.4GHz then you would need a 2.4GHz antenna. I believe your router would be 2.4GHz but you would have to check. I noticed that the antenna you linked to has type N connectors. You would need an adapter to go from N to RP-SMA. POE is a means of connecting to a network over a electrical line. I am not sure about that picture. I think that the only way to boost router transmit power is with special router firmware. Using an amplifier may also work but I cannot tell you that for sure. You would have to contact the seller of the device.

Depending on distance/line of site is what varies the frequency you use. Honestly i would check with your local radio station and see if they have an engineer that might be willing (for a little money) to help you pick out your best antenna option/setup, as to do something like this without seeing the land/setup, might cause you to have equipment problems/marginal setup. I have done this for several of my clients to get internet to there shed/separate office building, but wouldn't to make suggestions over the internet for fear of missing some minor detail that would cause you problems. 2.4ghz equipment if it meets your range would be the cheapest option probably. POE means you inject power into the ethernet cable so the device doesn't need a power coord ran up to your roof. Your wanting a wifi bridge, most then trying to extend your range.

Thanks Coleman. I think I have all the information I need to move forward in this project. I'll look into the radio staion. I am a frequent caller to the local sports talk show, maybe I can see if any of them might be willing to assist. Thanks again.

Np on the explanation, and like i said, for a wireless bridge situation to work best, with no troubles, its really best if someone with the knowledge can help you setup it up. http://www.fab-corp.com/product.php?productid=16437&cat=267&page=1 Is what i have used in the past, or the 5ghz version if i needed a long range. Basiculy you want to create your own hotspot, and then bridge it via that to your mothers house. Instead of making your pc's wireless card try to reach and send data back and forth all the time. Good luck!
