Long-time bafflement

Hi

I'm having difficulty booting into windows xp. When I start the computer, options appear to enter 'safe mode' etc, when i enter a prompt, the computer runs through various processes and it then returns to the same options page.

This may have happened as I turned the power of during the process of shutting down.

I got some assistance from the malware forum, and some more detail about this problem can be found through the link below.

I would appreciate any assistance.

Hi

Very possible that with powering off during shutdown a system file or two has been corrupted.

If you have important data on that hard drive that you have not already backed up then I would first see if you have another PC to hook this drive upto as a slave drive to attempt to see if you can access it and backup your important files.

Do you have the original XP cd? if so then one way to repair the install of XP is to do a dirty/in place install which basically installs XP over itself and im most cases leaves your original installed applications and files alone, however you will need to update windows xp again as it will revert back to whatever version CD you have ( RTM, SP1, SP2 ) instructions for this repair install are http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx
