My ATI Radeon 9800 128MB Pro fried itself last year after the fan stopped working. I'm just using a crappy temp one at the moment.

Any recommendations? I need to do some graphic and video editing work so 256MB would probably be best.

    K8N-E Deluxe
    AMD Athlon 3200+
    250GB WD 8M
    100GB WD 8M
    2x 512 Kingston DDR 400 (soon to be 2x 1GB)
i dont think the rest really matters

    maybe around 200AU/150USD/80GBP

    maybe a little less...

im scared to spend a huge amount. im worried that my next graphic card will fry itself as well..

i use that same card but its from BFG and its the 6600gt OC so its overclocked right from the factory and has a lifetime warranty. they also offer free 24/7 tech support, i love bfg but they tend to cost more.

Well I bought a 6600GT last year that cost me £110 (GBP).

Only 128mb but a brilliant card, would definitely recommend it.
For that price though, you can pick up a high end x700 card I believe.

Thats what a warranty is for,if your card is less than 12 months old you can return it to the retailer,if its less than 3 years old you can try and get an RMA you can return it to the manufacturer at the cost of postage for a replacement or a card of equal or above performance,if you post the name of the manufacturer I'll show you the next steps,if you have the box to it I'll be on there or alternitively written on the card,it may be manufactured by ATI in which case it wont have any other name on it and must be returned to ATI

For 80GBP, if gaming is not you upmost concern, you could go for a vanilla Geforce 6600 256MB AGP and have 20-30GBP change if you shop around. They will also play also every new game, albeit in 1024x768 max and maybe not on high graphics settings. For about 70GBP you can get a silent 6600 256MB AGP with no fan just a big heatsink.
Alternatively you could get the new x1600pro from ATI for about that price. This is a 256MB DDR3 AGP card and is very good value for money. Again not the best gaming card in the world but the image quality is very good. I prefer nVidia but was very tempted into getting one of these instead, mainly because of the 256bit DDR3 memory.

Ye this makes sense - a friend of mine bought a second hand 9700pro last year and a week later it fried. He called Crucial (the manufacturer) and told them he had bought the card from someone and didn't have a reciept or box, and it had blown. They asked him for the serial number from the card and then told him to return it. He was sent a brand new 9800pro as the 9700's were out of production.
Return your card and maybe you'll get a suprise :)
