    Hi,

I formatted my daughter's computer but I couldn't get it connected to the internet. My daughter and I share an internet connection. The cable comes into my computer, connected to a Wireless Gateway Netgear modem/router combo. The wireless signal goes to my daughter's computer. I believe the setup is called WiFi.

I contacted my isp and was told that I needed to get a driver from the computer's manufacturer. I went to the driver site to get the driver but I received a message that said there is no available driver for the computer. I contacted HP and was told the same thing. The technician offered to sell me a package that would have a 3rd party company find the driver on the internet for me but I thought that I would look for it myself first to see if I can get it without paying for it.

The computer is a Hewlett Packard Compaq (Presario-unsure), Model S4020WM, Windows XP Home. I believe the driver is DK215A, but I'm not sure.

I've looked around the internet and wasn't able to find it. Could someone else give it a shot?

This is VERY strange. I went to the HP drivers page, entered the model of your system, and promptly was given a list of all the drivers. Here's the link for the ethernet driver:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=326832&os=228&lang=en
All the rest of the drivers are available from this link. Scroll down a bit and you'll see all the "Summer 2003 Original" drivers listed.
    :-D

Thanks for the driver link, dlb.

Since my daughter's computer can't connect to the internet, I downloaded the driver to a thumb drive and connected it to a USB port on her pc. I doubled-clicked on the driver and received the message that's in the attachment, and Device Manager opened by itself at the same time.

I don't know what the message means or how to do it. Can you give me instructions?

I'm attaching a screenshot of Network Adapters - Hidden Devices Shown, in case the info is needed.

It would be better to see the screen shot with the hidden devices still hidden. Read the steps in this thread to install drivers via the Device Manager. However, I think the ethernet driver is already installed, but the sound driver isn't installed judging from the screenshot above. All the drivers can be downloaded from the link I posted above.

I just took a 2nd look at the top screen shot. It shows the sound driver is not loaded, and a wireless driver (or "wifi" driver) is not loaded. If the wifi is what you use to connect to the internet on that PC, you'll need to remove the USB device and get the model number from it. If there's no number on the actual USB device, post an Everest report and we'll go from there. The Everest report must be generated with the USB device plugged in to the PC.

This will need to wait until morning when my daughter wakes up. Her tower is inside a cabinet and she knows which connections are which. It's after 1:30 am here . . . she's sleeping and I'm ready for bed. I'll get back to you as soon as possible with the USB model number.

Thanks so far for your help.

My daughter didn't get a mobo disk with her computer so I don't know which audio driver she needs. I'm first trying to get her computer connected to the net because HP has a site that will scan a computer and determine which drivers are missing and will supply those drivers (hopefully), but I can't do that yet since I can't connect to the net.

Using the link I posted above, I found the audio drivers. Simply click on this link and the audio drivers page at HPs site will open. Now to the Everest report.... did you edit the report? It's a whole lot smaller than it should be. If it was too big to upload as the full report and was edited to make it smaller, just zip the full unedited report and upload that as an attachment. Be sure to have the USB wifi adapter plugged in when generating the report. Alternatively, you can use Unknown Devices. Run it, then click "List" at the top and select "Save list to file". You can then upload this report also.

    Hi dlb

I only removed her last name from the report. Other than that, I gave you the entire Hardware report. The WiFi was plugged in when I ran Everest. The green light on it was lit. I just got up a little while ago. I'll run Everest again and get the WiFi model number for you.

I downloaded the audio driver but haven't installed it yet.

I re-read the instructions at the link you gave me and the link at that link that explains how to install the WiFi driver. I need TUGzip to extract it.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/TUGZip_d4670.html
TUGzip can extract RAR files, ZIP files, 7zip files, many EXE files, and just about any archive or self-extracting archive you're likely to encounter. When installing TUGzip just click 'Next' all the way through. At the end of the install, there will be a little box for "Launch TUGzip"; go ahead and launch it; click "Next" all the through again until you see a "Finish" button; there will be a column on the left side with a bunch of different archive formats; click the "Select All" button; click "Finish". A window will open that looks like an Explorer-type window, close it. Right click the file you downloaded (the file you want to extract) and click the 2nd upward pointing green arrow, it will say something like "Extract to: .\filename" and the driver will extract to a folder of the same name.

Did you get a manufacturer and/or model number off of the USB wifi adapter?

(I'm off to work right now, so I'll be out of commission for a bit, but I'll try to stop in and touch base from time to time ;) )

The WiFi is model SMC2UWUSB-G. It's called an "EZ Connect g 802.11g Wireless USB Adapter."

I downloaded TUGzip and installed it. I right-clicked on Ethernet Driver for Wifi sp23946 file and chose the second up arrow. It showed that it was installing the drivers to a location on Drive C that it chose itself, which was the folder where the files are located. I did the same for Audio Driver sp23941. When I looked in Device Manager, the yellow question marks were still there.

I then tried leading "Multimedia Audio Controller" to the folder where TUGzip installed the driver but it found no driver. I tried the same with "USB2.0 WLAN" but it didn't find a driver for it either.

As far as I understand, the drivers were installed but Device Manager doesn't recognize them.

I downloaded and installed the AC97 Audio Driver Update and now her computer has audio. My daughter's isp, Comcast, originally configured the wireless set-up. She's going to call them and have them send a tech out to configure it again.

Her computer's hdd has a D partition for Compaq files. When I formatted partition C, partition D wasn't touched, so all the original drivers and other files are still there. If it contained a driver for WiFi, it should still be there. If Comcast had to install a driver for WiFi, they can install it again when they come out.

Thanks for all your help, dlb . . . it was very much appreciated. :)
