I am using Firefox and it always goes to a Google home page. Does google gather any information when i go to a web site? Is there a home page that isn't and is safe? Thanks.

I think Google does gather some anonymous info, as does Yahoo, and probably most other search engines. They do this in order to make searches faster and more accurate. You could set your home page to 'blank' and then simply type in the address you want to visit, but if you use Google at any point, it won't matter if it's your home page or not.

However, Google, Yahoo, msn, Excite, and the others are "safe" to use. But if you're searching for items that are flagged, like bomb plans, toxic gas recipes, Hitler and Mussolini's writings, then you're going to be monitored.

A persons homepage is usually the site(s) they visit most.

Mine for instance is set to open three pages, one of which is this forum :)

You can set your home page in firefox by going to tools >> options >> main and if you want to set more than one just put a comma between each address.

The vast majority of websites out there will be collecting some form of non-personal data each time you visit the site and the best way to stop this imho is to use the add-on NoScript 1.9.8.7 . It becomes a bit more user intensive but will halt Advertisements, "Google Analytics" and many forms of "drive by hacks" in their place. You allow the level of "active content" from any site. This is an example of the script being activated on the Firefox home page. Whenever you goto a page you know and trust you just allow that site and nothing else. This are simple examples but you goto some websites and it is amazing how much "rubbish" and or potentially dangerous "scripts" are running. IMHO take your PC security to the next level and try this add on, I have been using it for 2-3+ years now and haven't had any nasties.

I clear my cache and cookies everytime I close the browser. But, let's face it, I'm on cable with the same IP for about a year or longer. If google keeps everything, they can search by IP to see what I've searched for and looked at based on my IP if they have the time, manpower and incentive to do so.
