I have mainly been a console gamer for the 10 years. And now, this past year, I have been slowly starting to play games for the PC. What determines if I actually play an RPG all the way through is a good story line. The Final Fantasy series (FF7/ tactics in particular) has held my attention for years due to the story lines that draw you into the game. Giving you a reason to become powerful.

So my question is this: can anyone recommend any games for the PC that have the ability to draw you in via the storyline? I want a reason to become powerful, not just because I want to see how much I can "overkill" an enemy.

The best C RPG of the year must be Oblivion, IMO. However Neverwinter Nights 2 seems well made too. I haven't played the second so I can't tell for sure. A little older but good is Fable. I was addicted to it couple o' years ago and it defenately gives you an aim. None of the above is just killin and killin only to proceed to the next lvl. Thay can suite any taste of combat, warriors, mages, thieves etc.

I'll second Oblivion. My friend has 60 hours into it, and he's still going!

Oblivion is great, If you have the min requirements to make it better... my specs aren't the worst, and still I get lagg off Oblivion. In my opinion, not much can beat the final fantasy series.
Apparently FF12 is out for PC but I cant find it any where..
The PC world needs more games like Final Fantasy for the FF freaks....
There is alot of us, and RPG maker Don't Cut It!!
    cheers

Hell, I get laggy on Oblivion with these specs:

    AMD Athlon X2 4400+
    2gb PC3500 ram
    200gb Sata 3.0 gb/s hard drive
    Nvidia 7800GTX Factory OC'ed

    GREAT game though.

    how's that?
    Athlon 3500+
    Asus x1600
    1gig RAM
and it runs fine with the settings at 'high'

Anyway maybe we should find some trailers or reviews for our friend here.

    High settings aren't that great.

I mean, that from max settings are night and day. Any game can be gimped to play fast. I prefer to play them as they were meant to be played.

My Dad has Oblivion, but I can't play it on my system. Here are my specs:

    Motherboard: Intel D850GB
    BIOS: GB85010A.15A.0028.P09.0103091412 (up to date)
    CPU: Pentium 4 @ 1300 MHz
    Multiplier: 13.0
    Bus Speed: 100.0 MHz
    FSB: 400 MHZ
    RAM: 640 MB (2x64 MB RDRAM PC800 (400 MHz), 2x256 MB RDRAM PC600 (300 MHz))
    GPU: PNY nVidia 6200 Verto 8x (original: 351/532 OC'd: 415/775)
    OS: Windows XP Pro SP2

Morrowind plays fine, depending on some of the mods, Diablo 2 has no problems. Doom 3 is playable, but no audio. But I have to have almost eveything turned off.

Thanks for the advice, and keep it coming. I will look for FF12, and will let you guys know if I find it.

I loved oblivion, but didn't really think it had that great of a story line, especially not compared to the FF games. Maybe try KOTOR, although oblivion is a much more fun game :-S (that is if you value the story the most)

    Ive got a D850GB mobo

P18 is the latest (and last) bios for it, which will give support for up to about a 3.0GHZ CPU I think
Mine originally came out with P12, so P09 is a fair way back

When I had the 1.4GHZ in it, it ran Doom3 fine (normal settings) with:
    768MB PC800 RDRAM (2x 128 original + 2x 256 new)
    Gigabyte 7600GS AGP (Nvidia)

I was also able to run
'Warhammer 40000 Dawn Of War Anthology' (2006) with minimal lag

Last month I put in a
    socket 423 to socket 478 adapter, with a P4 2.8GHZ 400MHZ CPU
    from
    http://www.upgradeware.com
$30.00 USD for the adapter (cheap)
$219.00 USD for the CPU (bit pricey, but hard to find anything in 400MHZ FSB)

now I get no lag in DOW
    well and truly worth it.
If you get a new Mobo you probably wont be able to take your RAM or your graphics card with you (RDRAM & AGP respectively)

Ive been playing DOW for 6 weeks now, should finish it in the next week or so
    It is a big game
Highly recommended by me, be interested to know what other gamers think ?
Its similar to Warcaraft II and III, Age of empires II Gold - that sort of thing (RTS)
but better than both - especially Age OF Empires II
and its storyline goes for 40,000 years - gotta be something happening in it
Each of the 3 games in the Anthology has a slightly different style of play which keeps it interesting. Once Ive finished it, I will start it all over again straight away, which I dont think I have ever done with any game Ive ever played before.
I only paid $80.00 AUD for it (roughly $60.00 USD) absolute bargain

Nearly ten years, and I'm still recommending the Baldur's Gate series. (Recommending? Still playing.) I've also heard good things about Planescape Torment. Fallout 1&2 are good ones. Depending how into D&D you are, you might want to consider Temple of Elemental Evil. If you've ever played Diablo and enjoyed it, you might like Sacred.

Good storyline-focussed RPGs for PC are easy to find, as long as you are not dead set on only having the latest and greatest.

Just keep in mind as you read the list, that I don't consider Final Fantasy 7 to be an RPG; in fact I don't think tghat any of the games in that series is. As far as I'm concerned, RPGs allow you at least a small measure of control over parts of the plot, they give you moral dilemmas to solve and adjust to your ethics and moral choices... if Final Fantasy 7 was a true RPG it would have allowed me to sell Avalanche to Shinra Inc, then swear allegiance to Sephiroth and assist his quest to take over the world, only to kill him at his moment of triumph and reap the fruits of his hard work myself.

    Ahem. Anyway.

Here are my PC RPG favorites:

    *Fallout
    *Fallout 2
*Planescape: Torment (lots of dialogue to read, so not for the ADD-prone or impatient)
*Arcanum (but for the love of everything sacred, patch it first!)
    *Knights of the Old Republic
*Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
    *Oblivion

If you do decide to give Temple of Elemental Evil a shot, do yourself a huge favor and go find Circle of Eight's forums and get the fan-made patch packs from there, and install them all according to their HowTo. It will make the game a lot more enjoyable, in some situations the patches will even be the difference between playable and unplayable. (Yes, its a bit buggy. But the story kicks a**.)

If you liked Diablo, I strongly recommend Titan Quest. It's what Diablo wanted to grow up to be.

Odd, but I never found a problem in ToEE, I had a few crashes, but mostly minor. The biggest problem was trying to level up. That's HARD. The whole game is very difficult. Not to say it isn't fun, but the difficulty is definitely up there.

  18. Mimsy

Mimsy Superior Imperial Queen of the MG Games Forum

That is odd. I could barely play it due to crashes and game mechanics bugs, until I patched it.

Besides, you get the talking kid if you patch it. Awesome. ;)

Huh, I was playing in Win 98, so that might have accounted for some of it. But it's still great. I'll have to go back in a little while and see if I can complete a little more of the game.
