Ok, when i get my new laptop, i dont want to have to go in and spend 3 months getting all the settings the way i like them and installing programs. so. is there a program that will copy all my documents and settings as well as programs, essentially move all my stuff onto the new compy. i want to be able to choose what to move over and what to not. since its a new hardware config, i cant move the tweak utilities and stuff, but i want to be able to move essentially everything else. i also need to be able to choose wich partition to copy from and to. i know its a lot ot ask, but im sure you all can help

    thanks.

Every program that did that which I used to see around was pretty notorious for breaking things. Copy your data, then take the time to reinstall your apps. It will save you a lot of headaches.

Seconded..... I would start afresh with installing the OS and apps + tweaks.

pop all your documents and saves files/downloads to CDR and transfer then that way.

    DTG, try out

http://tinyurl.com/2xuja HDCopy. To quote from Australia's Internet Directory monthly magazine, p17, July 2004 edition.

"... HDCopy will set up your new drive identically to your old hard drive's Windows configuration, including hidden files. " End of quote.

I haven't used it but I trust the reviews of this mag. Program is free as a bonus.

Can you swop hard drives in and out of your laptop? I have 2 drive bays (1 permanent) and 1 swoppable, in my laptop. I have a permanent 30 gig and 2 swoppable 10 gig hard drives.

If you have something similar, maybe you can put your new drive in your old PC (laptop?) and copy direct in the same PC, otherwise maybe transfer, using something like the new Laplink USB software. Hope this helps. Bazza

PS: So I can drool over it, what are the spewcs of your new laptop. What brand and why did you decide on that brand and specs? Baz

ASUS, the review didn't mention that fact, but the fineprint on the accompanying sreenshot did. Missed it. Just downloaded it anyhow as I use W98. Bazza
