Looking for a program...

...which will automatically turn off my PC at a certain time / after a certain period. Does anyone know of a preferably free program which can do this? Any help appreciated I'm tired of having to stick around while something downloads or I convert a movie to turn it off and save on the juice.

It's very easy under Linux: just add to its alarm clock shutdown command or use init 6
It seems Windows has something similar: go to windows/system32, find shutdown.exe file. I'm not a specialist but you may run this file under FAR and write shutdown /h . It will load help and you will able to find option you were talking about. I almost sure it has to be there.

 

shutdown comes with XP, but not windows 2000. For Win 2K, you can download the executable into the C:\WINNT\System32 directory. The command you want is 'shutdown -s -t00' without the quotes. If you were to paste that into notepad, and save it as filename.bat, you would have a shutdown script, where -s specifies that you shutdown and -t00 specifies that you shutdown in zero seconds (the default wait period is 30 seconds)

From there, you can click Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Scheduled Tasks to have the system run this shut at the time of your choosing.
