looking for a software that underclock the cpu on laptops.

I use windows XP and I'm looking for a software that underclocks my cpu to lets say 600Mhz-800Mhz from my current Centrino 1600. This for saving the battery time when playing games that really doesnt demand more cpu power. I know winXP has a feature somewhat like this but it seems to be working automaticly, switching when I play any game. So I want to lock my cpu to a certain Mhz whatever I do it stays the same.

sorry thats not really what I was looking for, more of a program that constantly slows the cpu down so the fan wont have to run so hard. whatever I do on the computer my processor stays the same at 600Mhz

 

Wish my problem was how to SLOW down my laptop but there may be something in your BIOS that will enable you to extend battery life/slow down CPU speed. Check out your BIOS options at bootup. If nothing there then over to other MG 'ers for help. Bazza

That does what you are talking about, but doesn't keep it at 600MHz exactly. It just foricibly puts in HLT instructions. That means that the processor is in "sleep" mode for that clock cycle, so generates less heat and uses less power.

I doubt you will be able to underclock your CPU on a laptop, and if you do you can run into instability problems.

 

The only way I'm aware of to actually slow processor speed is to have a BIOS which lets you change clock multiplier speed. Software solutions can only do what is described above by goldfish.

 

I have a silly question,,did you check your clock speed when on AC and then when on batterys,,,reason I ask,,my gatwey laptop,,,automaticly drops the CPU to half speed on this end ,,its a 2.8 P4 HT runs at 1.4 on batt's,,Glenn
