So, we're considering taking the plunge and getting rid of our Cable TV. But, except for getting an external antenna for local stations, we just don't know the best way to do this and still be able to watch the shows we love. I know that most if not all of our favorites are available via the internet on our computers and to be honest, we "rarely" watch TV in real time, most is via On Demand so we're ok with that part. And we have so called "HD Smart TV's" so I'm guessing from the little I do know that they are able to connect with the internet so we can watch - but how do we do this? Do we have to have like an extra computer that we hook up to each TV? (Please don't laugh - we truly are novices at this). We don't watch alot of movies so not sure that Netflix would be of much use to us. So for anyone that wants to share their knowledge/advice/etc. I'm all ears and willing to learn.

Thanks guys (and gals) you have never let me down....

It depends on your brand of TV and if it is capable of connecting wireless. If it is you do it in the TV settings. Of course there is the HDMI port which does require a computer connected to the TV. Hopefully yours is capable of wireless.
A little more information about your TV would help.

If you buy a SMART TV with its own inbuilt wifi adapter (most are now) it will connect to your home WiFi (obviously setting it with the password). You should be able to easily connect to all the live streaming channels just like on a computer, and all 'on-demand' channels, ie ones that repeat programs shown before.
They are mostly very straightforward to set up with a manual and often an online screen guide too.

Just be aware that just because a Channel (ie. Netflix, HBO Go, CBS) is available, it does not mean you will be able to access it free of charge. Many require a monthly fee or an affiliation with paying for cable service.

You can try it out via a Roku before actually buying a Smart TV. It's basically the same thing...the smart tv just has it built in.

We are in the same process and hopefully we will ring in the new year cable free. Cable has been increasing every month and now can't afford it. We really don't have many options because it's a HUD financed senior housing. We are not allowed to have satellite and I looked into ATT U-Verse, but to my astonishment, they wanted me to pay them a $455 non refundable credit monitoring fee just to get service. I don't think I want to pay someone that much money just to be able to use their service.

Solutions so far: I purchase a Roku box and connected it to my television which I am currently searching and selecting my stations. I already have a new internet provider waiting to begin service once I am satisfied with the television content, I will switch over to the new internet provider and get rid of the cable company including the television, internet, and home phone service.
