Looking for CPU cooler for LGA 1155 board

So I'm putting a new build together, so I can play with the Ivybridge goodness, and I'm looking for an after-market CPU cooler. I loathe the stock Intel coolers, those little claw feet things never seem to attach properly, and I have nightmare about the heat sink and fan assembly surrendering to the powers of gravity and crash landing on the video card.

Since no one knows more about computer parts than the geeks here at MGs, I've decided to try and get opinions and feedback here, since some of our regulars are bound to have given in to temptation before I, and may have first-hand experience of 1155-coolers. My budget is in the $50-$70 range (this can be stretched, but prefer not to), and the thing is supposed to go on top of an i7-3770 in an ASUS P8Z77V motherboard.

Copper, with large and quiet fan much preferred, and looks are utterly irrelevant as long as it works and works well.

Are you gonna overclock?
May want to check out the self contained water coolers.
I used/am still using a Corsair H50 with a i7 920 and 950 which kept temps at high 60's, low 70s C with an oc of just shy 4.0 Ghz 24/7 folding. Easy assembly/install. No maintenance possible due to sealed nature of system other than dust blow out of radiator. Going on 2 years old no problems. augie used a H70 I believe for his folder with no problems that I recall. gloozit has that system now IIRC.

Thank you for this one!! I spent hours loathing the fact that there is no way to tell Newegg's search filters "every single CPU cooler compatible with LGA 1155". It didn't occur to me to just type it in the main site search.

I doubt it. I've looked at water cooling systems, but have been so happy with air cooling so far that I see no reason to switch.

Coolermaster Hyper 212+ Evo.....runs about $30-35 at Newegg. I use it myself, it lowered cpu temps dramatically and it doesn't take a brain surgeon to install. Its about 159 mm wide though, so you need clearance between your motherboard and the left side of your pc case to accomodate it.

Can overclock my i7 860 via a BCLK oc (similar to FSB type oc, which creates much more heat then a simple multiplier oc like the latest range i5's and i7's do) 800 Mhz and keep cpu at 29-32c idle and 52-56C during a 3 hr gaming session).

That one does look good as well. Do you know how many mm clearance it has between heatsink and mobo? My RAM is a bit higher than average (it's 26mm), and I kind of want to use all four slots.

 

The 159 mm (6.26 inches) tower cooler has a fan attached to its side in working mode.

This fan can be slightly slid up to avoid contact with memory slot #1, a taller ram module "could" hit it IF ITS NOT slid up. Fan has clips on its plastic cage that GRIP like crazy so it will stay exactly where YOU put it.

Fan is totally detacheable and can be mounted in 3 different directions.

It is BEST to mount it on side near ram modules so it can blow air THROUGH the heatsinks fins and out toward your rear exhaust fan (which is mounted high up on the back of you case).

Well in most cases here the Factory mostly we see is we do not know how big your Computer case is most of the time.When it comes to heat sinks.Some people have a mid tower and some have a full tower and some have a Micro tower.Where kinda guessing here because Some of them Heat sinks can be huge.

Yep, always build your own. Pc manufacturers skimp on quality components like psu's and cpu cooling. They may offer a decent cpu and video card but they give you a proprietary motherboard (with most of the bios options grayed out) and they provide a cheap psu that will limit the systems upgradeability. To top it off most enclose the system in a case inadequate to cool properly and effectively.

 

Based on these two glowing recommendations, I have now ordered the Hyper 212+. I will of course blame you for anything that I don't like about it.

Newegg's product page says the heatsink is 159mm, and my case claims it can host a 186mm cooler, so I'm not worried about fitting it that way. My main concern was fitting the RAM under it, since I do want the fan to blow hot air through the fins and towards the outtake fan, but if the fan can be raised as LTLSU says, that takes care of that.

My Hyper 212+ arrived today, and I also like that the heat pipes will be touching the CPU. I also like that all dimensions are printed on the box, including the distance between the CPU and lower part of the heatsink: 37mm! Since my RAM is 26mm, all is well. :major
