Looking for Data Recovery Software

I have a WD "My Book" external hard drive that is "dead". I have explored all options, so now my ONLY hope is to recover some of these files that I really do not want to loose.


So how do I pick a Data Recovery software? Any suggestions?

My first suggestion would be to open the casing and install the drive to a PC - it may only be the electronics interface in the My Book that's broken.

I have already done this and it did not work. So that is why I am looking for a recommendation for data recovery software. There are many to choose from and I do not know which to pick. I am willing to pay for a good one if it will work. I really want some of these files.

 

Well I went and looked at the "Recuva" site and it works on files which were deleted. I am not sure this will work for me since the files are on a drive that the computer can not see.

If it is totally dead, then this is an option. Though, it isn't cheap.

 

I use RecoverMyFiles when the freeware fails http://majorgeeks.com/Recover_My_Files_d4328.html.

It's not as easy or fast as the main page suggests, if the scan doesn't find anything, you probably need to change the scan settings, often takes me several attempts to find the correct scan type for the job in hand.
