Looking for ideal driver for ATI GPU

Hi all, I've been meaning to find this info for a bit and I've been told a few times this is the place.

I have an ATI radeon x1600 GPU 512mb PCI-E, it used to work well enough with the ATI recommended drivers but now that is not the case, I wonder if anybody knows the ideal working driver for this card?

I've tried only a few including Omega driver and the Omega driver was the only one that worked the best as of late, the rest I've tried (mostly recent ATI drivers) work, but when I play Xvid or Mp4 files the video freezes up at random points and I know it just isn't right, omega drivers seem to fix that problem but there are still rare video freeze ups.

3D games have always worked on all drivers I tried, but the video playback is not performing like it should, I also have big performance issues when rendering in virtualdub that seem random, but my old nvidia fx5200 rendered with vdub slow but very good.

So is there a driver release recommended for this card?

My specs are:

HP pavilion a1210n

I have added said video card and also bumped it up to 1 gig of ram

Added audigy LS PCI sound card.


Thanks for any help I'm about to reformat this PC and I want to be sure I got the right GPU driver to grab for a fresh start.

 

what brand is it? i prefer to get the drivers from the manufacturer rather than ati, they might give it a good test for their products. You might not get the latest driver version right away, but that's not usually a problem.

 

Sorry about that, it is an MSI brand.

EDIT: I haven't tried their driver yet at least don't remember doing so (bought off ebay a while ago without driver disc).

Going to try that out.
