looking for solid fax software

im not needing anything professional, just something simple to send and receive faxes, i have a scanner, a printer and a computer with a 56k modem, so i mean i would think those things could do what i need to send a fax once in a blue moon

the thing is, i want it to run in the background, like minimize to tray type thing, what choices are out there? id rather get somerthing free

Windows XP has built-in faxing. You can also try this:

I looked around at numerous web sites but there seems to be a very limited selection of free apps for faxing.... for info about using the WinXP built-in fax utility, take a look at this:

that first one is a free program but u got to pay for the service, plus it dont minimize to tray, i tell ya what i really want is an extension for thunderbird, that would be excellent

 

Well, that's what I get for taking a friend's recommendation. He didn't mention anything about a service, or paying for anything. My bad, I should have looked into it a bit more. I think you may be a bit hard pressed to find anything free that will work as a T-Bird extension. I think that the built-in XP faxing is probably your best option. It is definitely free and you have all the support you need at the Microsoft web site and knowledge base. Just out of curiosity, did you try the 2nd program I linked to?
