hello, newbie here to dvd burning and would appreciate any insight the experts have on the matter.

i'm trying to make copies of some dvds i bought, but i need some suggestions and tips.

what software would you guys recommend for fitting a movie onto a 4.7g
    blank disc?

i read up some on dvdshrink, anydvd and clonedvd, but was confused as to why clone would need to be used in conjunction with anydvd if one would have, say, nero.:confused

Nero will not backup store bought DVD's due to copy protection schemes used by the studios. AnyDVD and CloneDVD are paid products. There are several free products available that will do what you need. Here's a few:

So there you go. Those are all free. Try a few 'til you find one that's easy for you to use and understand.... good luck!

    thanks dlb.
cant thank you enough for the quick reply

i'll be sure to work this out and let you know what worked out, but just to clarify one thing, if you wouldn't mind:

i wont be able to use nero even after i rip the files to my pc using a program that does away with the copyrighted stuff?

Once the DVD's are successfully ripped to your hard drive, you should have 2 folders per movie: an AUDIO_TS folder and a VIDEO_TS folder. The AUDIO_TS folder is usually empty, but you'll need both folders to burn a DVD that will play in home DVD players. And yes, you can use Nero to burn the ripped folders. Just use NeroExpress and select Burn DVD-Video Files and follow the prompts. For best results, burn the DVD slower than you would burn data (I always use 4x); the extra time is worth the consistantly good results.... If you have any other questions, we're here for ya! ;)

well dlb, after installing dvdfab and following your instructions for using nero, wala, i have created a basic backup of a dvd. and it works in the dvd player too:D

in time, i'll work though all the options with fab and shrink and hopefully i'll go through no more than a couple 50 packs of dvd's.:D

i also installled all the other convertor programs and they'll come in handy soon too.

    THANKS AGAIN DLB!!!!!!!
