My son is looking to buy a laptop. He's a high school math teacher and does a lot of upper level math on his school computer. He needs it to be able to connect to the school projectors via VGA. He's a Windows 10 user and uses Microsoft Office. The size of the monitor is not a major factor. He does some gaming on his spare time. He must be able to connect HDMI, VGA, USB. He uses extended desktop in his school work and the more Ram the better. Storage is not a big issue since he has alternatives.

I've lost track of processors and which is better than which. Not sure what to recommend for RAM other than more is always better and more costly. Not sure of what specifications to recommend at this point. Cost is an issue since he is a school Teacher. He needs it pretty quick (like he's saying he needs it today)!!

Please help me tell him what he should be looking for.

You need to start by establishing a budget.

Also, he should check with his school districts IT department for permission, guidelines, and possible suggestions before connecting to school networks and other property.

My cheap Acer netbook purchased in 2013 has an HDMI, a VGA and three USB ports.

Make sure there are 3 USB ports. I've found that two is insufficient. I always connect a wireless mouse so the USB dongle for that stays in one port all the time.
I have an external portable DVD burner and the Y-connector for that uses two USB ports because one port can't supply enough power.

Yeah.... I bought one previous to this pc and found it to be junk. I returned it for an ASUS.

We like our cheap Acer netbooks. Both variations on Aspire. The 2011 is slow - CPU but the one I bought in 2013 is zippy.
I gave my husband the old one even though he didn't think he needed it. He is on it ALL the time and rarely fires up his desktop computer. I'm thinking of having an ssd installed. I don't trust myself to do it. We have a good "pop" (no mom) computer shop that does good work.

After Christmas, around new year , you can get more for your money.
I find mostly 15.6 screens seem to be popular, I have a Lenova 17" ,with 16gb ram, and core i7 that I purchased new nearly two years ago, for around £400 at the right time.
Personally, I find less problem with Intel systems, -screen size is individual choice- Almost anything will run Microsoft Office, and Windows 10. The more ram, the better
Occasional Gaming can be achieved with most, Graphics performance is usually reasonably good on most modern laptops -he will get away with on-board graphics, for anything other than intensive games.
I would nip around the local pc shops, and look at a few, but don't buy until you have been on-line and seen some reviews.
