    Go to www.crucial.com
and use the Memory Advisor Tool.

    Write all the specs down.

You don't have to buy the memory from Crucial; you use the tool, write down what the computer uses and go searching for memory.
As far as how much RAM, I can't answer that. I don't game and the most any of my computers has memory-wise is 2GB which works for my needs.

I'd also suggest that before you decide on a whopping upgrade of 16 Gb, you check that quantity. My quad core AMD has 8 Gb and flies, and my 4 year old laptop has only 2 Gb and does just fine. You need to check how much your motherboard can handle (max amount) and in what configuration.

My Gigabyte MB can handle 16 Gb max, and that has to be done in pairs of 2 or 4 Gb, i.e., 2 Gb-2 Gb-2 Gb-2 Gb, 2-2-4-4, or 4-4-4-4. Done any other way (e.g., 2-4-4-2) and the MB won't recognize it.

If you don't have the motherboard manual, look it up online. Then compare what your MB can handle with what your games maximum recommended RAM is. If the max recommended is only 8 Gb, don't waste your money putting in 16 Gb, even if your MB can handle it.

Check reputable online stores for cheapest prices - just make sure your specs from Crucial's configurator match exactly with what you're buying. By "exactly" I mean more than the basics like ECC or not ECC, but all the details like memory speed, bus speed, timing, CAS Latency, voltage, etc. If its listed, match it. I use newegg and geeks as reputable stores with good prices (if I'm allowed to say that?!)

Hope this helps; let us know how you do.
