I am going in for an orthopedic operation on June 16th 2008 at Jong Island Jewish Medical Center in New Hyde Park. It says that laptop computers are allowed. Does anybody know if they have WiFi for the patients?

I just did quick search of their site and did not find anything helpful.... you may want to give them a call and see if they can answer that for you. It did state that only Battery operated devices (except Cell phones) are allowed, so make sure that your battery is charged.

It sucks that they don't let one use the mains power, at least in a designated area on a separate circuit and I do understand the need to keep anything unauthorized off of their power grid. Anyways, good luck to you and have a speedy recovery.:)

    Thanks, guys.
I guess it does make sense that you can't use the power. Someone could very easilly send a very high jolt through the grid, and knock out the hospital's power. Then everybody who needs electricity to power up a machine they need to survive would die.

I think it more unlikely they would allow unknown machines onto the network than worry about the power.

The hospital where I work is very picky about the wireless, all locked down by MAC address, only hospital equipment allowed on the network.

As for power, they are usually very well seperated, we lost power a couple of months back, I was in one of the smaller computer rooms, my wife was working in ITU at the time. We both came back with similar stories as all the machines start beeping to let you know they are on battery power. Once the generator kicked in, we can seperate different parts of the power circuit to ensure the emergency circuit stays live. This involves all the life supprot machinery, theatres, some lighting and the computer room UPS.

Admittedly, it was at this point that we realised the numpties that had set up our server room had plugged all the monitors direct into the emergency circuit but not the UPS itself. Once the battery died, all the monitors were working but not all the servers. Fortunately they did shut themselves down neatly and there is a complete hot backup of our digital imaging system on another site that took over very quickly.

Except its not hard to have a seperate wifi network for guests to use. Most of your better wifi ap's will do this with out any issues.
